http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/warmup.html
Home Free Projects D-groups Programs ... BACK C reate a warm afghan blanket for someone in need. That's what Warm Up America! is all about - keeping people warm. Sound simple? Well, it is, and it works because you can make a difference whether you complete one small section or an entire afghan.
Crochet or knit one 7" by 9" rectangle (or more). Join your section to 48 others to complete a full-size afghan or send it to us to join. The original Warm Up America! afghan resembles a patchwork quilt of many textures and colors. Of course, you can knit or crochet more than one section or complete an entire afghan in any pattern or color yarn you wish.
IMPORTANT SHIPPING INFO
When possible, we encourage Warm Up America! participants to work with family members, neighbors and friends to complete afghans and distribute them in their own community. When this is not possible, the Council will gladly accept sections, strips or completed afghans. We distribute the completed blankets to social service agencies that contact our office. Ship to:

Welcome to Warm Up America! You can make a difference to someone in need bycrocheting or knitting one or more 7 by 9 sections for Warm Up America!

    Welcome to
    Warm Up America!
You can make a difference to someone in need by crocheting or knitting one or more 7" by 9" sections for Warm Up America! by joining sections into completed afghans donating yarns and needles/hooks to groups in your community contributing money to expand WUA! to groups nationwide, including everyone from children to older adults. Information about getting started follows and it is as easy as 1, 2, 3. 1. INDIVIDUALS * GROUPS * STUDENTS You may choose to work on your own, ask neighbors and friends to join you, involve your co-workers, or members of an organization to which you belong. Warm Up America! is a terrific school, scout, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America or 4-H project too. Hints on getting a group going... * Ask for volunteers. This can be as informal as talking over the back fence to a neighbor or if you are in an office setting, posting a notice on a bulletin board. If there is an ongoing organization or church group to which you belong, ask that one meeting be designated to Warm Up America! And suggest that members bring needles and any left-over yarn they might have around the house. (If you are a knitter or crocheter, you might want to bring extra needles and yarn as well.) * If you are school teacher, scout, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, or 4-H leader, Warm Up America! is a wonderful community service project in which to involve the children, plus they learn a skill that will last a lifetime. If you are a knitter or crocheter, teach your children basic knit or crochet stitches, involve them in completing the afghan and selecting the place to donate the afghan in your town. If you need help teaching, ask for parent volunteers or seek out volunteers from a local knitting or crocheting guild in your area. For a copy of:

8 x 8 x 8 Just spend at least minutes a day crocheting or knitting and soon you will have an " x " (20cm x 20cm) square. When you sew 48 squares together you have a blanket 48" x 64" (120cm x 160cm). To be given FREE to those who have no shelter or are in need of warmth. Making the blanket is fun to do and a good way to use up those scrap balls of yarn that are laying around the house. Squares can have many different c o l o r s in each one. This makes for a very colorful blanket too! In some areas, people are getting together for "Stitch and Chat" sessions. This is a good way to meet new people and to make knitting or crocheting the blankets a lot more fun. You can mix 'n match the squares so that your blankets get lots of different squares too! When squares or blankets are done just contact Blankets For Canada for distribution in your area.
