62. Welcome To WarmUpAmerica.com!
Kids are discovering knitting and crocheting and the Warm Up America! Teacherswho regularly instruct children in knitting and crocheting counsel
http://www.warmupamerica.com/kids.html
Warm Up America! Kids are discovering knitting and crocheting and the Warm Up America! Program is one of the reasons. Young people across the country are teaming up with their peers to Warm Up America!, helping others, and in the process are discovering these crafts are fun and relaxing. Plus, the added benefits of Warm Up America! are: * Community service
* Self esteem
* Problem solving
* Math and motor-skill development
* Intergenerational activity
* Fun group project
* Learning an enjoyable skill that will last a lifetime Getting Started Free basic knitting and crocheting pattern instructions, which you can download, are available at this site. There is also a link on the patterns page to basic how to knit and crochet illustrations. We encourage you to reproduce and distribute them. Children are generally quick to visualize how to do things and are less hesitant than adults to pick up needles and hooks and jump right in. However, as you all know, their attentions spans are short, so the more assistants you have, the smoother and more fun the sessions will be. We also have found that there are always several children who will pick up the basics pretty quickly and help other students. Finding A Teacher If You Do Not Knit or Crochet * Ask Students
To find teacher volunteers, start with your students. Ask if any of their family members or friends know how to knit or crochet and would be interested in volunteering.

63. My Charity Page
So I started collecting gently used toys from friends, family, and garage salesand cleaned them up and started crocheting and knitting clothes for them.
http://members.tripod.com/~TammyMcCann/charity.html
Now I have such a waiting list for shipments of toys and afghans that I thought I'd appeal to my fellow crafters across the internet to widen my donation list and to get help with the toys and afghans. If you have some gently used toys you'd care to donate, I'll gladly accept them and donate them to the children. I am also looking for 6" squares in bright colors for the afghans and some kind souls to help make some toys for the children. If you are interested in helping, my contact information is below. All toys are tagged with a note to the children stating who made the toy and that you are thinking of them. The afghans will have a cotton patch on the back with a list of everyone who contributed to that afghan.

"Domesticated" blog
Krissy has given me permission to talk this up on here. :)
I've created a group blog called "Domesticated" which is at domesticated.peacefulwaters.org it's a place where we can talk about a lot of the stuff we talk about here (crocheting and knitting)... but also about cooking, sewing, housekeeping, cross-stitch, gardening, and a lot of other things that go along with not being in the dorms and keeping an apartment or house. If nothing else, it's a place where we can help each other in areas where we are strong and learn in areas that we might not know a lot about.
I'm still going to be an active member of "Chicks with Sticks" and "Domesticated" is not competing with this blog. I think there's a need for both and if you'd like to do both, I totally welcome you over at "Domesticated". jen wrote at 11:39, am, MST

Central Wisconsin Knitting Guild Our Knitting Profiles: Andrea - I learned how to cast on and do garter stitch from my Dad when I was seven or eight. When I was sixteen, I decided to to take up knitting in earnest, and tried to learn how to do stockinette stitch. The diagrams and instructions in the books I read made no sense to me ("I don't want to purl, I want to knit!"), so I unknowingly un-vented my own way of knitting-back backwards. It worked well for me, and I made some doll sweaters. Eventually, a knitter I met taught me how to purl ("I don't know what you are trying to do, Andrea, but it's not purling! Let me show you..." "You mean I have to turn it around every row?!"). Then I found out about gauge, and being a loose knitter, despaired of ever matching the gauge a pattern called for...until I "met" Elizabeth Zimmermann through her books, which I found at the local library. Her percentage system gave me hope! I could knit at

Since 1992, Shannock Tapestry Looms has imported a line of very high quality Australian wool yarns from the Victorian Tapestry Workshop in Melbourne. The yarns come in a lovely palette of c o l o r s . The yarn is 100% wool from Australian Corriedale crossbred sheep. It is spun into a fine 3/20's worsted yarn and dyed in the Victorian Tapestry Workshop's own in-house dye shop. It is mothproof and colorfast. The yarn is spun and dyed specifically for tapestry weaving but it is also suitable for use in fabric weaving, crocheting, both hand and machine knitting, and also for needlepoint, embroidery, and other types of stitchery. Shannock Tapestry Looms is the exclusive importer and distributor of these yarns in the United States. In much the same way that a painter mixes paint on a palette, weavers and other fiber artists can now use these yarns to create their own unique and nearly unlimited range of color variations by mixing a number of strands of yarn together to create the yarn weight and blend of colors they desire. The cost of the yarn is $3.75 per 25 gram cone

"Is this the best way?" S T U D E N T S
What age do students have to be?

Most of our students are age 9 - 13. What about boys? Can boys join the program? YES! Approximately 30% of our students are boys. Boys are natural knitters. Traditionally, knitting was a man's trade. Only after the invention of the knitting machine in the Renaissance period did knitting become predominantly a woman's past-time. What kinds of things do we make? Each student will start by making a simple book mark to learn the basic stitch. We also encourage students to make a simple square to contribute to a blanket which is given to charity. Other projects include: hats, scarves, mittens, bags, small animals and toys as well as larger projects such as sweaters. K N I T T I N G What's the difference between crocheting and knitting? Perhaps the most obvious difference is that crocheting uses only one needle, whereas knitting uses two (or more) needles simultaneously. What's the difference between English and Continental?

http://www.geocities.com/myrrhsea/fiber.html
Peace.... I would like to share with you a wonderful adventure, into the world of fiber. Each morning we dress for another day. While we give much thought into choosing the right "look", very little goes into how fabric is made. Since a young girl I have enjoyed knitting, crocheting and embroidery, among other needlework, purchasing my yarn or embroidery cotton at the nearest fabric shop with no clue as to how it got on the shelf, let alone tell the difference between synthetic or natural. One day I happened upon a program on television demonstrating the whole "Goat to Coat" process as practiced by many in the past and by a few, mostly as a hobby today. This demonstration included raising fiber animals, shearing and spinning fiber for knitting, crocheting and or weaving. That's all it took. Not only did I found the whole process fascinating, I thought perhaps this could be a great way to bringing me closer to my desire in becoming more self sufficient. As with most "adventures" I set off on I wanted to learn and participate in all aspects of this new adventure, from raising my own fiber animals to spinning the fiber as well as weaving. And raising my own fiber animals would afford me an opportunity to bring home more furbabies :-) MyrrhSea Fiber Craft Getting Started Our Fiber Animals

The Zen of Fiber
If you have had the opportunity to visit some of my other pages on this site you will note that spiritualism is a very important part of my life. I receive great joy in discovering, recognizing and confirming the spiritual in everything we do and in all that is around us. I found this to be most evident in all aspects of fiber crafts. If you think about it the whole process, caring for these beautiful animals, collecting the fiber they produce, spinning and weaving, knitting or crocheting is truly and amazing gift.
