The World Today

HAMISH ROBERTSON: Australian schools are under increasing pressure to prevent crimes associated with gang activities, violence, vandalism and bullying. But many aren't equipped to deal with law enforcement issues. The Australian Institute of Criminology has warned that without better resources in schools, an entire generation is at risk.
Kate Tozer's report begins with an archival story of the Columbine School Massacre in the United States.
COLUMBINE STUDENT: We were just all sitting there in the library, and then they just started. All you hear is, like, fire crackers, and then I looked out the window, and there's a kid with a trench coat and a shotgun throwing pipe bombs in the parking lot, and then he shot a girl outside, and then he came into the cafeteria and you could hear, like bombs and shotguns going off, and then he came into the library and shot everybody around me.
KATE TOZER: Three years ago, a quiet, middle class suburb of Denver, Colorado, in the US was gripped by terror. Two teenage boys went on a rampage through the buildings of the Columbine High School and killed 15 people, in the worst in a series of schoolyard shootings in America.

Introduction to the Department
The Law Department is both one of the largest in the School and one of the strongest law departments in the country. In 2002, it was among the few to be given a top rating of 5* in the latest evaluation of research by the Higher Education Funding Council and five out of five in the similar evaluation of teaching. Among UK law schools, the LSE Law Department enjoys a unique advantage in forming an integral part of an international school of the social sciences. This position has shaped the strong interdisciplinary character of much research undertaken within the Department, a significant number of its members teach courses in more than one Department of the School. The research strength of the Department is also enriched through participation in a number of interdisciplinary centres and institutes at the School. These include: the Centre for Analysis of Risk and Regulation; the Centre for Global Governance; the Centre for the Study of Human Rights; the Development Studies Institute; the European Institute; the Financial Markets Group; the Gender Institute; the Mannheim Centre for the Study of Criminology and Criminal Justice; and the Suntory and Toyota International Centre for Economics and Related Disciplines. Members of the department also hold editorial positions on more than forty law journals.

Criminology is the study of crime and criminal behavior. The criminology program focuses on crime as a social phenomenon and the causes of criminal behavior. The major provides an overview of institutions, issues and causes of crime, and social control; it also offers a strong foundation in liberal arts, a basic knowledge of behavioral sciences, and a strong professional growth potential for those pursuing a career in criminology or the criminal justice system. Many criminology majors enter law, law enforcement, corrections, and other social service careers or graduate school. Admission Requirements
To be accepted into the criminology major, students declare a pre-criminology major and complete Soc 1101, Soc 1301, Soc 2001, and Soc 2306 with grades of C or above. If a student chooses to retake any of the four courses, the department will accept the grade in the first retake only. In addition, students must have a 2.50 overall GPA, including transfer credits, at the time of application to the major. Honors Requirements
The department honors program recognizes majors who demonstrate outstanding academic performance, provides special educational opportunities for such students, and encourages the development of specialty areas within the major. Honors students participate in independent research, working closely with a faculty member. Qualified majors apply to the honors program any time after they have completed Soc 3151-3152 but before the end of the sixth week of the first semester of their senior year.

GENDER AND PSYCHIATRIC REFERRALS Margaret Mayer Recent literature demonstrates that there is a general consensus among social scientists that women more often than men are diagnosed as psychiatrically "ill". Keeping in mind that mental illness is socially defined, gender differences in psychiatric diagnosis and incidence is explained in terms of the ideology of femininity and "sickness" and gender role differentiation. The overall objective of this study was to compare gender characteristics of 132 clients referred to a psychiatric crisis service pilot project which operated from October 1986 to October 1987 in the Outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria. Data was collected from the files of the pilot project. The characteristics of this research indicated that where were significant gender differences in clients referred to the crisis service. The findings also suggested that gender is an important factor in investigating differences in formal diagnosis. Masters by Thesis BLUE MURDER: PRESS COVERAGE OF FATAL SHOOTINGS OF AND BY POLICE IN VICTORIA Jude McCulloch This study is a qualitative content analysis of two newspapers' coverage of three fatal shootings in Victoria in October 1988. The shootings are those of Graeme Jensen, killed by the Armed Robbery Squad on 11 October 1988, and Constables Steven Tynan and Damian Eyre who were killed by offender/s unknown the following day.
