EXECUTIVE SUMMARY BETWEEN February and June 1998 the Institute of Criminology (University of Cape Town) conducted a survey of crime and violence in 20 schools in the Cape Metropole and beyond. The schools were both primary and secondary schools selected from a representative sample of ex-model C, disadvantaged and peri-urban categories of school. The broad aim of the study was to explore the nature and extent of crime and violence in schools within the South African educational system. The survey constructed a profile of the experiences of principals, educators and learners and examined their responses to the problem of crime and violence. This data then informed practical recommendations for crime prevention in schools. The survey revealed that crime and violence is endemic to both primary and secondary schools. Theft of property and possession of weapons were a major problem in all schools. Fighting/physical violence and vandalism was reported in 95% of the schools. Drug abuse was a serious cause for concern in 90% of the schools, bullying and intimidation was reported in over 75% of schools, assault in 60% of the schools, gangsterism in 50 % and rape in seven of the twelve secondary schools.

Racial biases exist in schools, students believe
Visible minority students, especially blacks, are more likely to believe teachers treat them worse than white students by Sue Toye June 20, 2002 Visible minority students, especially blacks, are more likely than white students to perceive racial biases in their high schools, says a U of T researcher. "When students perceive that this important institution - which has a huge impact on their lives - is fundamentally against them, there is a problem," says Scot Wortley, a criminology professor and author of the study. "We have to find out why these perceptions exist and how to change them." Wortley and co-author Martin Ruck, a professor from the Graduate Centre at the City University of New York, analysed data from a survey that examined high school student perceptions of school disciplinary practices and climate. More than 1,800 Grade 10 and 12 students from 19 Toronto high schools were surveyed. The researchers found that slightly more than one-third of black students surveyed (compared to 16 per cent of South Asians and six per cent of white students) believe teachers treat them worse than students from other racial groups. More than half of the black students surveyed (compared to 22 per cent of South Asians and nine per cent of Asians) believe they are more likely to be suspended from school than other groups.

Criminology BSc (Hons) Criminology UCAS code L3M3 BSc/Cr 3 years full-time Whilst it is true to say that Criminology is the study of crime, this is not helpful in giving you any idea about what such a study entails. Even asking what is meant by crime involves us in delving into such diverse topics as Psychology, Economics, Sociology, Philosophy, Politics, Law and Ethics. Thus the study of crime may be viewed as an area of intellectual struggle involving multiple definitions and perspectives on the problem, its nature and origin and how best to tackle it.
