By Jane Prendergast, jprendergast@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer
FBI violent crime statistics released Monday for Cincinnati differ significantly from city police numbers, including a gap of 18 homicides in one year. No one could explain why the FBI's preliminary Uniform Crime Report data for 2001 was different from crimes tracked by Cincinnati police in every category of serious crime.

MADD Victim Advocates (Metroplex Chapter, Texas) MADDvocate, Winter 2003 For most people, the criminal justice system can be a frustrating maze of laws, charges and legalese (the language of lawyers). When you are a victim of a violent crime such as drunk driving, the shock, grief and anger layered on top of trying to navigate through the system can be utterly overwhelming. But understanding the basics of the criminal justice system can help in seeking justice. Criminal cases begin with law enforcement officers who gather information about the crime. Victims should get the facts from the investigating officer, including information on a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) test, whether charges were filed and what type, when and where to get the crash report, and any other pertinent information. What is a 'MADD Victim Advocate' and how can one help me?

What is "Community Notification" all about?
An individual who has been convicted of a sex offense, or another related offense, will soon be released from prison to live in the area where you live or work. The purpose of the information contained in this packet is to provide you and your loved ones a greater measure of safety than you might have had if you were unaware of the background of this offender, or had no knowledge of his release or place of residence. Minnesota Statutes provide the opportunity for the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office to give you the information you need to make good decisions with regard to the safety of yourself and those around you.
The person who is to be released from a prison in Minnesota has been convicted of a crime that requires registration with local authorities, and to keep those authorities apprised of any changes in residence. This information is kept and maintained on a computer system by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and provides police agencies with essential information as to the nature and whereabouts of certain convicted criminals who reside in their jurisdictions.
Why is the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office conducting this meeting?

Crime Rates
What is the Crime Rate? The crime rate is the number of Criminal Code offences reported for every 1,000 people. It is often a better measure of trends in crime than the actual number of offences because it allows for population growth. What is BC's Crime Rate? BC's crime rate in 1997 is 128 Criminal Code offences per 1,000 persons, an 8% decrease from the crime rate reported in 1996. The significant drop in BC's 1997 crime rate represents the largest year-to-year decline in the province during the last 20 years. After peaking at a high of 152 Criminal Code offences per 1,000 persons in 1991, BC's crime rate has been decreasing over the last number of years. In addition to the 8% reduction reported in 1997, BC's crime rate also fell 8% between 1992 and 1996. In total, BC's crimerate has fallen 16% during the last six years. Notably, the 1997 crime rate has decreased to the same rate as reported in the province during the early eighties. The Property Crime Rate in BC Property offences have a major impact on the crime rate as they account for more than 60% of total reported crime.

Running Head: Differential Sentencing as a Function of Gender Differential Sentencing of Juvenile Offenders as a Function of Gender John H. Bickford, Jr. Salem State College Abstract Investigated was the effect of gender bias in the assignment of suspensions for juvenile criminal offenders. Twenty-eight participants were presented with a fictional account of either male or female high-school students involved in an act of vandalism and indicated an appropriate suspension. The accounts were otherwise identical and also brief; longer sentences were found to be positively correlated ( r pb ) with the male vandal condition. It is suggested that this differential must derive from a preexisting disposition in the participants, the nature of which is not clear but may be an attitude (such as paternalism) or a cognitive schema that rationalizes such favoritism. It is a seemingly reasonable assumption that male and female juveniles receive differential treatment in the assignment of punitive measures to correct deviate or mischievous behaviors. A common belief is that female miscreants receive preferential treatment and are punished with less severity than males. This assumption appeals strongly to common sense, and it does correspond to some similar findings regarding the adjudication of adult criminal offenders. Zingraff and Thomson (1984) found that adult females convicted of felony offenses received significantly shorter sentences than adult males convicted of similar crimes; however, in contrast to the common sense expectation, this study also found that female

However, if the couple is living together and serious physical injury is caused during the assault, the charge would be listed above in 1-3. Penalty: 1 to 20 years imprisonment, or 12 months jail and/or $1,000.00 fine.
