University crime stats announced
Chris Martin
News Editor If there is anything to make of the numbers, one thing is certain - people don't steal bikes like they used to. The campus crime statistics for 1999 show that Chico State University is a rather safe place to be, and the statistic that stands out is the marked decrease in bike theft over the last three years. Down from 134 in 1997 to 38 in 1999, University Police Chief Mike Minard can't pinpoint the reason why thefts are down so much, but he's happy to see it. "In the same way crime often increases, perhaps in this case it decreased for reasons other than us," Minard said. Minard mentioned more people locking their bikes and parking them in brighter lit areas. For reported sex offenses, there were two listed as non-forcible. "More often than not, these are indecent exposure cases - the guy in the raincoat who flashes somebody," Minard said. Burglaries have gone down over the last three years, from 14 in 1997 to eight in 1999.

News Releases / 5/7/01 Crime Stats Decrease News Release For Release 5/7/01 Double-digit Decreases in March 2001 Crime Statistics The impact of crime continues to decrease on the citizens of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. This is evidenced by the dramatic decline in reported violent and property crimes for March 2001. Violent crime overall has fallen more than sixteen percent (-16.3%), while property crimes are down nearly thirteen percent (-12.7%). This translates to more than 1,600 fewer crimes this year, compared to the same time last year. Homicides and rapes have fallen nearly forty percent, while vehicle thefts are down more than thirty percent. Other large drops are in burglary, aggravated assaults, and the most common crime, larceny, down nearly ten percent. Much of the success for these declining crimes is attributed to the contributions from the citizen/police partnerships that have been developed. Citizens have become more aware of how to protect themselves from being victimized and many appear to be active crime prevention participants. But reminders are still important. Recently a citizen had their home burglarized while they were outside doing yard work. Please remember it is important to keep windows and doors locked when outside. After finishing yard work, make sure all lawn equipment is stored and secured. It only takes a few minutes to protect your hard-earned property and make life difficult for a criminal.

News Releases / 2/29/00 Sexually Oriented Business Arrests News Release For Release 2/29/00 First Arrests For Sexually Oriented Business Violations Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officers have arrested four people employed at four lingerie-modeling establishments for violation of the Sexually Oriented Business ordinance. The four businesses are Sensations, 3401 Craig Avenue; Fantasies, 6400 South Boulevard; Gentleman?s Choice, 11200 Nations Ford Rd.; and Essential, 5300 Old Pineville Rd. The four employees have been arrested on 9 charges. None of the four businesses were licensed as required by the Sexually Oriented Business ordinance, and are accused of providing adult entertainment in a lingerie modeling studio. One person is being charged with indecent exposure. The Sexually Oriented Business ordinance requires all lingerie modeling businesses to be licensed, removal of doors from modeling rooms, and requires that modeling entertainment be performed in front of more than one patron and in the presence of a non-entertaining employee. The Sexually Oriented Business ordinance went into effect January 15, 2000. Since then 32 adult oriented businesses have received the proper license. All peep show booths at adult bookstores have closed, and two topless establishments have gone out of business. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is pleased with the success of the Sexually Oriented Business ordinance.
