Contact Us Advertising Comics Crossword ... Archives Wednesday November 29, 2000 AZ Student Media New Web site lists college crime stats By Jose Ceja Arizona Daily Wildcat Parents and students can research schools nationwide Before strolling down any dark alleys around campus, it may be wise to consult a new Web site offered by the U.S. Department of Education. Crime statistics for more than 600 colleges, universities and career schools are available at ope.ed.gov/security, which can help parents and students evaluate colleges. Various crime statistics - from liquor violations to hate crimes - are accessible under the amendments to the Higher Education Act of 1965 that require the Department of Education to collect crime data from colleges and make the data publicly accessible. Katherine Mills, a studio art freshman who came to the University of Arizona from Illinois, said the information would have been helpful in choosing a college. Mills said she took a tour of the University of New Mexico and later found out about the school's high crime rate. "They didn't tell us anything about that on the tour," she said.

Part 1 crime in West Sacramento decreased 4.61% in 2001, however it is important to note we have changed the way aggravated assault is defined. According to the Department of Justice, an assault is considered aggravated only if someone seeks or requires medical attention from a professional. Previously, every felony assault was counted as an aggravated assault. In order to accurately show crime trends all assaults (simple and aggravated) have been included in several of the following graphs. Chart 1 shows the percentage change of Part 1 Crimes between 2000 and 2001: Crime +/- Amount +/- Percentage Homicide Rape/Attempt Rape Robberies Aggravated Assault Burglary Motor Vehicle Theft Larceny Total Although most of the categories saw a decrease in the number of crimes committed, motor vehicle theft increased by 33% (94 cases). Several cities in California experienced a similar increase in motor vehicle theft in 2001.

Advertisement By Jake Bleed The Independent In late 1995, crime statistics for Grand Island and Hall County confirmed what police on the street already knew: Use of methamphetamine had increased tremendously in a very short period of time. According to Grand Island police records, 13 meth-related arrests were made in 1994, just under 10 percent of the 134 drug-related arrests made for the year. In 1995, crime statistics show 66 meth arrests more than five times the total for 1994 and 289 total arrests for drugs. "We were turning meth up everywhere," said Sgt. Dennis Leonard, supervisor of narcotics investigations for the Nebraska State Patrol. "It was obviously much more available in that area and at that time." Not long after police picked up on the meth boom, Grand Island and the surrounding area were named a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area. With the designation came a flood of federal money.
