ANR-1139, New Nov 1998. Mary Beth Musgrove, Extension Program Associate, Horticulture, Auburn University Container Gardening O ne of the most versatile and creative forms of gardening is container gardening. Planting a container garden is much like creating a floral arrangement. However, live plants can be enjoyed for a season or longer period of time. Almost any plant can be grown in a container when proper growing conditions are provided and can add a temporary splash of color and art wherever desired. Some other reasons for container gardening are:
  • Your backyard or traditional gardening space is limited or unavailable.
  • Your time for gardening is limited.
  • Your mobility is limited to working in raised beds or containers.
  • Your gardening site is unsuitable for growing the plants you want to grow because of poor drainage, soil conditions, or too much shade or sun.
  • You have a desire to be a creative garden artist!
These are some of the advantages of container gardening. The biggest disadvantages to growing plants in containers are the maintenance requirements of watering and fertilizing. Some helpful techniques for container gardening, including choosing containers and soil mixtures, selecting plants, and planting, fertilizing, and watering your container garden, are discussed in these specific sections of this publication.
Choosing a Container
Generally, plants can be grown in anything that will hold soil and allow proper drainage. Some of the more traditionally used containers include terra cotta (clay) pots, plastic pots, hanging baskets, wire baskets lined with sphagnum moss or fibrous liners, concrete planters, planter boxes, whiskey barrels, 5-gallon buckets, tubs, and bushel baskets. Some of these containers are more durable than others are.

If you have a small area or don't have the capacity to grow a largegarden, consider container gardening. Gardening in containers
http://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/ggk/container.htm
If you have a small area or don't have the capacity to grow a large garden, consider container gardening. Gardening in containers can be just as rewarding as having a full size garden. Many plants grow in pots just as well as they do in the ground. There are a few things to consider when planning for a container garden if you wish to be successful. The first is to consider the plants. If you are planting more than one plant in the same pot, which many do for an attractive interesting container garden, be sure that all your plants meet the same requirements. Requirements to consider are amount of light, amount of water and fertilizer scheduling. Also be sure that the size of the container matches the size of your plant. Some other things you might consider when planning your container garden are such things as height, color, and texture. Variations of these elements will make you container gardens more attractive and very interesting to look at. When watering your container gardens, the best time to do so is in the morning. Watering in the morning allows your leaves and soil to dry out, preventing diseases and viruses. You should water your plant accordingly. You should check to see if your plants need watering before adding more. Overwatering is the most common reason for container plants dying. If you push your finger into the soil, this should give you an idea of how moist or dry the soil is. Do not watering the plant if the soil is already moist.

North Carolina State University Many people who live in an apartment, condominium, or mobile home do not grow a vegetable garden because space is not available for a garden plot. Lack of yard space is no excuse for not gardening, since many kinds of vegetables can be readily grown in containers. In addition to providing five hours or more of full sun, attention must be given to choosing the proper container, using a good soil mix, planting and spacing requirements, fertilizing, watering, and variety selection. Containers are available in many different sizes, shapes, and materials. All containers, whether clay, wood, plastic, or ceramic, should have an adequate number of holes in the bottom for proper drainage. Additional holes should be drilled or punched in containers that do not drain quickly after each watering. Drainage is reduced when the container is set on a solid surface such as a cement or patio floor. Raising the container one or two inches off the floor by setting it on blocks of wood will solve this drainage problem. The size of the container will be determined by the vegetable grown. Generally, most vegetables grown in the soil can be grown in containers as long as ample space is provided for root development. Shallow rooted crops like lettuce, peppers, radishes, and herbs need a container at least 6 inches in diameter with an eight inch soil depth. Bushel baskets, half barrels, wooden tubs, or large pressed paper containers are ideal for growing tomatoes, squash, pole beans, and cucumbers.

Choosing a Container
  • Almost any container will do as long as it has a drainage hole and is at least 6-8" inches deep. Be creative—try using a pail or cracked kitchenware. Even an old boot can add a whimsical touch when planted with a single bright marigold!
  • The larger and deeper the container, the less you’ll need to water and feed, and the more room you’ll have for diverse plants.
  • Keep in mind that smaller containers are higher maintenance because they dry out faster. Watering more frequently removes nutrients, so you’ll want to feed at least every other week with Miracle-Gro® Plant Food
Which Plants to Use
  • Annuals are perfect for containers—shallow roots, fast growth and lots of blooms.
  • Choose an assortment of plants that have similar growing needs, such as all plants that thrive in sun or a collection of shade-loving annuals.
  • Keep in mind how tall your plants will be when they’re fully grown: containers will look top-heavy if planted more than 1 ½ to 2 times the pot height.
  • Opposites Attract: Try mixing low/trailing plants with spiked/tall ones; or light leaves with dark. Or try a dramatic all-one-color arrangement for a real punch!

Garden Birdhouses Garden Windchimes Gardening Gifts Directory Decorating Your Garden Gardens have, throughout time, been a sanctuary where people enjoy the presence of nature, appreciate the veritable blooms of their labors, share the company of friends and family, or renew the self with a few quiet moments. Apart from the beauty of the plants themselves are the elements added to enhance its essence . These items include tables and chairs, statues and stepping-stones, works in metal and stone, and all things in between. Some items serve additional duty as the music of the garden: wind chimes, fountains and a crackling fire make both a visual and an aural contribution. The container garden is not excluded from the concept of décor. In fact, given that most homes that have container gardens are very limited in free space, the garden area often does multiple duty as a recreation area, outdoor parlor—even a place to eat and drink.
