CALIM (the Consortium of Academic Libraries in Manchester) comprises the libraries of the Universities of Manchester and Salford, Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester Business School, and UMIST. Students from the University of Manchester can use any of these libraries for reference purposes. Research students and staff have borrowing rights. For computer science, the Joule Library at UMIST is probably the most useful. Library catalogues provide bibliographic information about books and journals, and details of their whereabouts. Important sources include: the catalogues of the British Library and the Library of Congress COPAC (a joint catalogue made up from the catalogues of major UK university libraries); and UK OPACs (a list of UK university library catalogues).

High-Performance Computing Libraries and Tools
Modeling complex systems with thousands of variables and analyzing very large, complex data sets are tasks that the common desktop computer processor cannot handle. So, scientists often harness the power of thousands of processors by using massively parallel computing systems. At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, our scientists work with state-of-the-art parallel computing systems in the Molecular Science Computing Facility. This center contains a newly acquired a .25-teraflop prototype of a 9.1-teraflop Hewlett Packard Linux-based supercomputer. The prototype HP supercomputer utilizes Itanium-2 processors, HP's ZX1 chipset and a Quadrics interconnect. The center also contains an IBM SP computer system with 512 processors, 262 gigabytes of memory, 5 terabytes of disk storage, and a theoretical peak performance of 247 gigaflops. However, in addition to powerful hardware, scientists need programs that can take advantage of this power. The average modeling or analytical software program is not optimized for running on massively parallel systems. However, our computer scientists have created computing libraries and tools that harness the power of the hardware. Using these tools, you can perform intricate calculations and develop sophisticated models of complex systems, from cloud phenomena to groundwater interactions. In some cases, these tools provide more precise, accurate data tools than current laboratory equipment.
