Although I had lessons in keyboarding a number of years ago, it isn't as if I sat down in a typing class every day and just learned to type. Yet these days, I have to admit that I am thankful for my keyboarding lessons. Had it not been for the fundamentals that I learned, such as finger positioning and the "proper" movement to strike certain keys, I assure you that my time spent at a keyboard would have been far more frustrating. I do not claim to be some sort of master typist, and I would note that all of us are always working to improve our skill level. You obviously can't expect your fourth graders to suddenly start typing all of their homework before turning it in, but you can teach a building block that will help them master typing in the long run. The placement of one's fingers on the keyboard is key when learning how to type. While it will require lots and lots of practice before your students begin to feel that they're typing with any sort of speed, you can accomplish a lot prior to the practice that only a typewriter or computer and time can provide.

Course Description of Keyboard Mastery - Full Course
Keyboard Mastery, the Full Course, will teach beginners how to type, and teach experienced typists to type faster and more accurately. This course has been field tested and adopted by the U.S. Government, Dept. of Labor, National Office of the Job Corps. It is a suggested text in its list of courses in the Clerical curriculum. It is appropriate for Middle School, Jr. High, High School, and adult-College-University. For beginners , the course is designed to teach keyboarding by touch (without looking at the keys or your fingers) to speeds of 35+ wpm and accuracy of no more than 1 error per minute. The alphabetic and punctuation keys, keyboard numbers, and symbols are covered. Every lesson contains timed exercises and students are encouraged to meet the speed and accuracy goals (whatever speed is required for an "A" grade in the Setup) in each exercise before continuing on to the next one. Be sure to enter a grading scale whether or not you are taking the course for credit. The grading scale determines your goals. Goal-directed practice on each exercise will help you progress much further, and faster. You will master each exercise before continuing on to the next ones. (If you have trouble with one exercise, you can go on but be sure to come back the next day and try the challenging exercise again to raise the timing score.) There are almost timed exercises, which includes the option to create six timed exercises of any duration. Lessons 1-11, which cover all the letters on the keyboard, contain 15-second timings, 30-second, and 1-minute timings. The remaining lessons include 15-second, 30-second, and 1-5 minute timings. The purpose of short timings in the beginning is to get the fingers and mind working together at a rapid rate. The Setup can be changed to accommodate a shorter period of time by omitting some lessons.

Christa McAuliffe Fellow Speaking Solutions has published this by permission from Michael Rutter and The Daily Herald. Are your children at risk? Millions are. Currently, 21 million Americans suffer from some form of repetitive stress injury (RSI) including carpal tunnel syndrome. What is especially troubling to health officials, however, is the ever-increasing injuries among children and teens. For the record, one in four adult computer users will suffer from some form of RSI. With children, since young bodies are still growing, the number is greater. A repetitive stress injury can be crippling . . . permanently crippling. At the least, it can be quite painful and temporarily decapacitating. Why? Frequency of usage. Mary, an honors middle school student, noticed numbness in her fingers and wrist. As the term progressed, the pain got worse. It got so bad she had a hard time picking up her pencil. Her keying teacher noticed something was wrong.

Developing Keyboard Skills
This factsheet contains information about various methods of developing keyboard skills. The main way to become a proficient user of the keyboard is by learning to touch type. There are various programs available to accomplish this, including computer based and audio-based courses. This factsheet also highlights other keyboard skills that can be developed such as using keystroke combinations instead of using a mouse. A list of suppliers of the products mentioned in this factsheet is included at the end of the factsheet.
Why develop keyboard skills?
Whatever your level of visual impairment, learning your way around the keyboard and learning to touch type are important skills to learn. At the most basic level these skills allow you to increase the speed at which you can prepare documents and input information into a PC. For many tasks, using a keyboard can often be faster than using a mouse. For people with little or no useful vision, keyboard input is usually the only realistic way to both input data and control a PC. Although great strides have been made in voice recognition software, the most practical and accurate way for someone with a visual impairment to control a PC is by use of a keyboard. If the visually impaired person had an additional disability which meant that input using a keyboard was impossible, then voice input would be considered but only in combination with a speech output system.
