INTRODUCTION
Background: Unstable Comoros has endured 19 coups or attempted coups since gaining independence from France in 1975. In 1997, the islands of Anjouan and Moheli declared their independence from Comoros. A subsequent attempt by the government to reestablish control over the rebellious islands by force failed, and presently the Organization of African Unity is brokering negotiations to effect a reconciliation.

It is a group of three islands, Grande Comore, Anjouan, Moheli and several islets. The Comoros Islands are volcanic in origin and Grande Comore has an active volcano known as Mount Kartala while 50% of that island is a desert lava field. Anjouan and Moheli have a black basalt relief with a wide fertile valley. Anjouan has a natural harbor at Mutsamudu and all the islands have lush vegetation. Major Cities (pop. est.); Moroni 24,000, Mutsamudu 15,000, Domoni 8,000, Fomboni 5,600 (1990). Land Use; forested 18%, pastures 7%, agricultural-cultivated 45%, other 30% (1993). CLIMATE: The Comoros has a tropical climate with a dry season from May to October and a wet season from November to April. In the wet season heavy rain and strong winds prevail from the northerly Indian Monsoon while in the dry season the continental winds prevail from the southeast. Average annual precipitation varies from 1,100 mm (33 inches) to 5,500 mm (217 inches) depending on the location. Average temperature ranges in Moroni are from 19 to 27 degrees Celsius (66 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit) in August to 24 to 31 degrees Celsius (75 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit) in March. PEOPLE: The islands have a mixed population of different ethnic groups. The principal ethnic group are the Antalaotra while there are other groups such as the Casre, Makoa, Oimapasaha and Sakalava. All the inhabitants are descendants of immigrants from Africa, Arabia, Indonesia, Madagascar, India, China and Malaysia.

Phone: Email: jokisch@ohio.edu Office: Clippinger 113 Office Hours: The Class: : Geography is commonly thought to be an exercise in place-name memorization and the accumulation of trivia about the world. Geography as a discipline however, does much more than place-name memorization; geography should help us understand the “natural” and human-created world in which we live. Through examining concepts and approaches used by geographers we will discuss a variety of cultural and social issues. The goal of the class is to help you acquire tools that geographers use to understand issues of contemporary importance (population growth, development/underdevelopment, land-use, ethnicity, religion) and to explain why the world looks the way it does. This thematic survey of the field will occur through lectures, a text-book, videos, assigned articles, and mapping assignments. The Requirements and Expectations: This syllabus lays out the subject matter we will address and the criteria on which you will be evaluated. Your job is to come to class prepared and participate as called upon. My job is to help you learn the subject matter and evaluate your performance fairly. It is expected that you come to class having read the materials assigned for that day. If you miss a class, get the notes from a classmate. If you become confused about either lecture or reading material, or if you just want to know more about the class or geography, please email or stop by during office hours. Or, go to the

    Geography
The Cayman Islands are located in the Caribbean Sea south of Cuba, from which they are separated at the closest point by about 240 kilometers (see fig. 19). The three islands are an outcropping of the Cayman Ridge, a submarine mountain range that extends west from the Sierra Maestra mountain range in Cuba. Grand Cayman is the largest of the islands with a total area of 195 square kilometers. Cayman Brac, 142 kilometers northeast of Grand Cayman, is only 20 kilometers long by 2 kilometers wide. Little Cayman, eight kilometers west of Cayman Brac, is sixteen kilometers by two kilometers in size. The total land area of the three islands is 260 square kilometers, or approximately that of Austin, Texas. All three islands are low lying and are composed of limestone and consolidated coral. A seventeen-meter hill at the northwest tip of Grand Cayman is its highest point. The highest point on Little Cayman is only twelve meters in elevation. Cayman Brac is distinguished by a forty-three-meter limestone cliff that rises from the sea on its eastern tip. Vegetation is largely scrub with mangrove swamps covering about a third of all the islands' area. Located 920 kilometers southeast of Miami and about 50 kilometers southeast of the Bahamian island of Mayaguana, the Turks and Caicos are a group of 8 major islands and more than 40 small islets and cays (see Glossary). The islands are made up of two groups separated by the thirty-five-kilometer-wide Turks Island Passage: the westernmost Caicos Islands, including six of the major islands, and the easternmost Turks Islands with the remaining two major islands (see fig. 20). The islands have a total land area of 430 square kilometers, about the size of San José, California.

< BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS A watershed in the history of the islands was the arrival of the Shirazi Arabs in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Shirazi, who originated from the city of Shiraz in what is now Iran, were Sunni The first Europeans to visit the islands were the Portuguese, who landed on Njazidja around 1505. The islands first appear on a European map in 1527, that of Portuguese cartographer Diogo Roberos. Dutch sixteenth-century accounts describe the Comoros sultanates as prosperous trade centers with the African coast and Madagascar. Intense competition for this trade, and, increasingly, for European commerce, resulted in constant warfare among the sultanates, a situation that persisted until the French occupation. The sultans of Njazidja only occasionally recognized the supremacy of one of their number as tibe , or supreme ruler.
