Keynote KeyNote Qos: Taking Out The Garbage (4) "With the current state of Internet technology, the highest achievable score on the Streaming Index at this point in time is about a 6.0. This is for ideal delivery of a 300kbps video stream with a frame rate of 20fps," explained Matt Parks. "A "10" on the Index is near-DVD quality. Although that is extremely uncommon on the Web right now, that is the standard that the public sees on TV and by which video is judged. We expect the ratings on the Streaming Index to improve, just as they have on Keynote's other industry indexes, with improvements in technology and Web operations." Industry-Standard Benchmark Since Keynote is currently able to measure only one of the four dominant streaming architectures we feel that its measurement results should be understood as limited in context and scope Our readers may ask themselves, "Why spend thousands of dollars on a service that can't tell me which of the top three streaming architectures will work best on my site?" Some may also insist upon seeing performance comparisons to Flash-based sites, even though it will be a bit of an apples to oranges comparison.

Nanotube Union

The perfect combination of irradiation, heat, and luck led Rensselaer researchers to weld together single-walled carbon nanotubes. The first-ever junction unites pure carbon cylinders with remarkable electronic properties. The researchers believe this discovery could pave the way for controlled fabrication of molecular circuits and nanotube networks.

Crystal Rarity

In the ashes of an experiment to make superconducting nanotubes, researchers at Rensselaer found they had created rare symmetrical crystals of boron carbide. These large crystals, measuring a micron in size, rarely occur in nature at that size and could be harder than conventional engineering materials. Further research will determine potential applications of the material.

"SkyWave is a significant win for SnowShore", said Deb Mielke of Treillage Network Strategies, Inc. "The combination of SkyWave's "open" service infrastructure with SnowShore's rich content integration and processing capabilities will offer service providers unlimited choice, and potential profits, in the delivery of "voice enabled" applications."

Two high-profile movements to harness the power of the global network of computers will start pooling their resources next week as academia's "grid" computing initiative meets the Web services trend that's sweeping business computing. Ultimately, cooperation between the two groups could mean improvements in areas as diverse as genetics research and credit card billing. At the Global Grid Forum in Toronto, business-computing and Web services heavyweights IBM, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, Compaq Computer and Hewlett-Packard will converge with the academic powers that spawned the grid concept, which connects servers and storage systems into a worldwide pool of computing power. Both groups have been working on parallel visions for harnessing the power of networked computers. Merging the two movements will be culturally and technologically complicated, but the overall cause stands to benefit from the substantial progress made by each group so far.

Vodafone and BBC Set the standards for future mobile and multimedia services
Imagine watching your own personalised BBC news programme on your mobile phone wherever you are in the world, listening to a news bulletin, or even finding out what the latest budget really means as the service calculates the impact on your personal finances. These are just some of the future services planned to be introduced by Vodafone and the BBC following the announcement today of their historic agreement set to define the standards for future mobile, internet and multimedia services. Vodafone AirTouch, the world's leading mobile communications company and the BBC, the world's leading news broadcaster have today joined forces to develop and deliver continuously updated news, sport, entertainment and business services via text, audio and video for mobile phone users. Proving the multimedia and internet potential of mobile networks, the two companies will exploit the technology available using the Vodafone Interactive service, text messaging, WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) enabled handsets which incorporate internet browser technology and when available, the 3G (3rd Generation) mobile networks. "Vodafone envisages that in the future more people will be watching the news via their mobile phone than at home in front of their TV set," explained Alan Harper, Board Director of Vodafone UK, "Vodafone's agreement with the BBC marks the first step on the road of true mobile and multimedia convergence. Our aim is to redefine the wireless future to further open up the endless services available to customers via their mobile phone, using Vodafone Interactive, WAP and eventually 3G and this agreement with the BBC is just one of the many services that our customers can look forward to."

Signing of strategic alliance agreement between Vodafone and China Mobile (Hong Kong)
Vodafone Group Plc ("Vodafone") and China Mobile (Hong Kong) Limited ("CMHK") today jointly announce the signing of a Strategic Alliance Agreement as contemplated by their announcement on 4 October 2000. The Agreement provides for close co-operation in many areas, including the exchange and sharing of corporate management, technical and operational expertise and resources, joint research and development, the introduction of global products and services for the mobile community and the development and implementation of standards and protocols relevant to mobile communications. The companies expect that their combined resources, expertise and experience will help to create a global mobile platform with unprecedented opportunity for shareholder value creation. The Agreement is intended to be a long term commitment between the parties. It is the intention of CMHK to make Vodafone its preferred partner for any form of co-operation falling within the scope of the Agreement. Vodafone intends to make CMHK its sole strategic partner in China for all areas of potential co-operation that fall within the scope of the strategic alliance. Vodafone has also indicated to CMHK that it would wish to increase its equity interest in CMHK, currently just over 2 per cent, should further equity participations in CMHK be made available to foreign telecommunication companies.

For the purposes of this policy, Australian Catholic University's information technology resources are considered to be a part of the global Internet.
