Applications Operations Service Providers Structures for the delivery of applications and services may be broken apart, and recombined in new ways. As such, no structure need be thought complete, and no structure need be thought permanent even structures as massive and interconnected as communications networks. Even these structures are, in a sense, deliberately temporary, as mutable as any construction a child might create from an Erector set or a pile of Lego blocks. And yet a sense of permanence may creep in. A child may like a particular configuration so much that it becomes a monument, essentially defeating the purpose of the Erector set, which is to encourage creative act after creative act. Similarly, in the telecommunications industry, it is possible to resist change, perhaps because a new structure seems risky, that is, because it lacks the appealing familiarity and security of the old structure.

David Lynch is an American filmmaker with European sensibilities, famous for his cinema of absurdity full of psychogenic fugues and travelogues from everyday Hell. Trained as a painter at Corcoran School of Art (Washington), he went on to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (Philadelphia), and the American Film Institute (Los Angeles). His feature debut film "Eraserhead" (1977) is a nightmarish meditation on family life. His "Elephant Man" (1982) received a Cesar, "Wild at Heart" (1990) the Palm d'Or in Cannes, and the TV series "Twin Peaks" (1990) changed the aesthetics of this medium. Lynch also designed soundscapes and furniture, and his paintings and photographs have been exhibitioned internationally. Other films: Blue Velvet Zelly and Me Lost Highway Straight Story Mulholland Drive
David Lynch has been invited to the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, to lead an Intensive Summer Workshop. LYNCH WORLDS (2-credit workshop)
Explores the sublime, trangression, trauma and the fantasmatic by creating a discordance between reality and the absolute proximity of the Real.
Life is very, very complicated and so films should be allowed to be too.

The Carrier-Class Gateway, Defined Next-generation networks seldom invite us to meditate on the macabre, but the latest trend decomposition does just that. The very word suggests the ultimate dissolution of all that once lived. And yet, within the context of next-generation networks, we are invited to think of decomposition as something positive. Perhaps decomposition is an unfortunate word, for the uses we would now assign it. On the other hand, it may be more appropriate than anyone might have guessed. Consider that dwelling on the macabre can be entertaining. Pulse-quickening. Even life-affirming. How can this be? Just possibly, the fascination with the macabre relates to the sense of wonder we may feel when contemplating nature's cycles of decay and renewal.

06/04/02, 1:46 p.m. ET In this month's panel, we talked about media gateways: What are they? How do they work, what applications do they enable, and how do we use them to integrate voice with the IP network? Our panel: What Do Media Gateways Enable? Keith Dawson got the ball rolling by asking the panel to talk about some of the things that media gateways facilitate, asking them to lay out some of the applications that next-gen media gateways enable? "What, precisely, distinguishes their 'next-gen-ness'?" Jerry Gavin of NMS replied:
The Media Gateways will be able to provide the access of applications to enable enhances services. These applications can be IVR, Fax Messaging, Conferencing, ASR, TTS, Media streaming and transcoding. The Media Gateway will terminate the traditional PSTN connectivity (ISDN, SS7..etc) and route the via a media platform (can I say my own board, CG6000) to the IP networks using various IP call control (H.323, SIP, MGCP...etc.) and IP protocol (TCP/IP, RTP, RTCP and UDP) to communicate to the media servers that will be running enhanced services. What make them the "next-gen" is it an open architecture in regarding to hardware and software. The close system or legacy equipment does not have the density or scalability to offer all the enhanced services the NEPS and SP need for it's growing customer base.
