Christopher Columbus courtesy of Maps.com In 1492, Columbus and his first crew set sail from Palos, Spain on the Nina, the Pinta and the flagship, the Santa Maria. Two months later, on October 12th, crewman, Rodrigo de Triana, first sighted the "new world" somewhere in the Bahamas. Most people are aware of the basic facts of this incredible story of exploration and discovery. But, did you know that Columbus actually took four voyages to the new world? Have you ever wondered what his crew ate on those voyages? And did you know that Columbus was arrested in 1500 and sent home in chains during his third voyage? There is a lot more to the story of this famous explorer than the old children's rhyme. It would be difficult to under-estimate the significance of the voyages of Columbus, even though the explorer had no idea where he was when he made his most momentous discoveries. Christopher Columbus and Columbus Day, observed on October 12th each year, provide a great opportunity for lessons in history, cultures and a lot more. Education Planet offers this Christopher Columbus Curriculum Corner, which includes some excellent Internet resources, including web sites, lesson plans and activities. You will also find a great list of educational resources, including books, videos and more, all available through the Education Planet Store.

Fall Fever
Catch it here with Homeschooled Kids! October Newsletter - 2002 October is here and fall officially arrived on September 21. Everyone speaks of spring fever but have you ever experienced the fever that accompanies fall? Awwwww, there is nothing like the first cool morning when you feel the crisp air against your face or when you first feel the crunch of fall leaves beneath your feet. Throw yourself into the fall season anticipating all that is soon to follow. Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner and that alone should cause your temperature to rise :) Instead of mourning the passing of lazy summer days, embrace all the joy that comes with the turning of the calendar page. God creates an appreciation for every season. Have you ever noticed that summer tends to get unpleasantly warm towards the end of August. The cooler temperatures are a welcome change and God intended us to enjoy the variety that he has provided to us with the four seasons.
