Hi Emma, I am an Aussie currently teaching in Colorado (due to
husbands job transfer) Once over here, I had to get a green card, then have my
Aussie transcripts evaluated eg through SPANTRAN. They
then check to see if your Aussie qualifications are
equivilant with which ever state you want to teach in. Once
that is completed you have to apply to the state
certification board for certification. Can be a long
process if your Aussie qualifications don't meet their
expectations. Don't give up though, if I can do it anyone can.
Good luck Colorado is a beautiful state to live in and teach Posts on this thread, including this one

The Colorado Educator Licensing Act of 1991
Educators who hold certificates (types A, B, C, and E) which expire after July 1, 1994 must apply for Professional Licenses upon expiration of their current certificates. Instead of the old Type A, B, C, and E certificates for teachers and special services providers, there is now a Provisional Teacher License, a Professional Teacher License, and a Professional Teacher License with Master Certification:
  • The Provisional License is for beginning teachers. It is valid for three years and renewable only once.
  • The Professional License is for both teachers who earn the Provisional License first and for teachers who are/were certificated under the 1975 law. The Professional License is renewable every five years.
  • The Professional License with Master Certification is for teachers who first earn Professional Licenses under the new law and then meet criteria specified by the Professional Standards Board. This license is renewable every seven years. Of the three licensure tiers, this is the only voluntary tier. Letters of authorization, intern licenses, and emergency licenses are available under the 1991 law as they were under the 1975 law. Principals and other administrators who hold Type D certificates are licensed under the 1991 law in a manner similar to, but separately from, teachers.

COST, QUALITY OF NEW PROGRAMS AT ISSUE, OFFICIALS SAY
    February 28, 2002
    By Kate Fowler
"We are just waiting for a new fiscal note one that shows this really is an affordable program," said Briggs Gamblin, director of community affairs for the Community Colleges of Colorado.
Teacher-in-residence programs "exist because of a shortage of teachers, and because they offer a higher level of quality to train teachers when they are needed immediately," said Steven Cohen, director of the teacher-in-residence program at Metropolitan State College of Denver.
The uncertainty of how much the proposed TIR programs will cost community colleges is linked to other uncertainties about how community colleges will ensure quality in their programs.
In order to become licensed by any type of certification program, a teacher must meet all state performance standards, according to Bridget Collins, director of alternative licensing for the Colorado Department of Education. The standards cover eight general areas and require thorough knowledge of education methodology, content and pedagogy, she said.
Because teachers must have a four-year degree to participate in a TIR program, usually they already have thorough knowledge of a content area, Cohen said of the Metro program.

Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.
