He also recruited General Bernadino Caballero, a war hero with close ties to López. After President Juan Bautista Gil was assassinated in 1877, Caballero used his power as army commander to guarantee Bareiro's election as president in 1878. When Bareiro died in 1880, Caballero seized power in a coup. Caballero dominated Paraguayan politics for most of the next two decades, either as president or through his power in the militia. His accession to power is notable because he brought political stability, founded a ruling partythe Coloradosto regulate the choice of presidents and the distribution of spoils, and began a process of economic reconstruction. Despite their professed admiration for Francia, the Colorados dismantled Francia's unique system of state socialism. Desperate for cash because of heavy debts incurred in London in the early postwar period, the Colorados lacked a source of funds except through the sale of the state's vast holdings, which comprised more than 95 percent of Paraguay's total land. Caballero's government sold much of this land to foreigners in huge lots. While Colorado politicians raked in the profits and themselves became large landowners, peasant squatters who had farmed the land for generations were forced to vacate and, in many cases, to emigrate. By 1900 seventy-nine people owned half of the country's land.

Introducing Geography and Technology into Science Via Biodiversity Joseph Kerski Abstract: Introduction Through a grant from the National Geographic Society , geography and technology has been effectively spread into science curricula through a project entitled "Exploring Biodiversity Along the Front Range of Colorado." This project was innovative in four areas. First, it brought together federal, state, university, and K-12 researchers and educators to produce educational lessons based on biodiversity. Second, it brought concepts of biodiversity conservation to Colorado high school students, while simultaneously satisfying important state geography standards and providing a model for similar instructional activities in other regions. Third, it incorporated GIS technology and methods into some of the lessons, and resulted in the production of new spatial data and a new series of maps. Fourth, teachers and students began to use geographic concepts in their biology and other science courses. Biodiversity is the variation among life and its processes at all levels from genes and individual organisms, through species and ecosystems, to landscapes, regions, and continents. Global species biodiversity is now being lost at a rate similar to that of the mass extinction of the geological past, even though the goods and services that flow from biodiversity in the USA alone are worth hundreds of billions of dollars annually. Because many concepts pertinent to biodiversity conservation have spatial aspects, geography proved to be an excellent means of introducing students to biodiversity.

Colorado I've been to Colorado twice, both times to attend the Space Science Institute's Education and Public Outreach workshop. Luckily, one of my good friends from school, Lew, lives in Boulder, so I had an excuse to visit. The first time I visited, which was in March 1998, we went snowshoeing in Rocky Mtn. Nat. Park, and did lots of driving around. Unfortunately, I didn't have the right kind of camera lenses and my pictures didn't come out as nice as I would have liked. This is Lew standing on Bear Lake. It was all frozen over. Very cool. This is Lew and I snowshoeing - some nice stranger took our picture. The 2nd time I was there, April 1999, we took a road trip to the Sand Dunes National Monument - which is the most amazing place I've ever seen in my life. Here are the Spanish peaks. This is the way we approached the dunes, so this was our first view. You can't see the dunes until you drive around to the other side of the mountains. The Dunes are about 800 ft. tall at the highest point and are at the foot of these 13,000 ft. mountains. (Of course, the dunes are actually at somewhere around 8000 ft. in elevation, so the mountains aren't actually 13,000 ft. taller than them.) This was our first glimpse of the dunes.

Colorado Geology A map of the major geologic regions of Colorado. There are three major topographic divisions in the state which correspond loosely to three major geologic zones. The topographic divisions are: Eastern Plains Rocky Mountains Colorado Plateau Roughly forty percent of the state is plains with the remaining area equally divided between the plateau and mountain zones. Geologically, the eastern plains and the western plateau are classified as sedimentary zones. This means that the predominate rock type is sedimentary. There are igneous and metamorphic areas in these zones, but they are small in comparison to the large sedimentary area. The Rocky Mountain region is comprised of a complex assortment of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock formations with all three groups fairly equal in proportion to one another. Drainage throughout the state occurs through three separate systems, with all rivers originating in the mountains. All drainage west of the Continental Divide flows into the Colorado River and out to the Gulf of California.
