At the end of each excerpt, you have the opportunity to visit the abstract of the original paper or article excerpted. No. 1 For a river bigger than life such a condition seems unthinkable. Plunging from frozen heights of 14,000 feet on the continental spine , the Colorado writhes for 1,450 miles. It etches the Rocky Mountains, it carves the mile-deep Grand Canyon. For only 56 years have its red-mud floods been under control. European explorers thought the land it flowed through was useless. "Ours has been the first and will doubtless be the last party of whites to visit this profitless locality," wrote Lt. Joseph C. Ives of the Army Engineers in 1858, after steaming upriver to the present site of Hoover Dam in search of a navigable route between the Rockies and the Pacific. "The Colorado River, along the greater portion of its lonely and majestic way, shall be forever unvisited and undisturbed." As rivers are measured, the Colorado has only a few superlatives: Its elevational drop is the greatest in North America; it is one of the siltiest (before the dams, it carried an average load of 380,000 tons a day); and it is one of the saltiest, carrying nine million tons a year. Although it ranks seventh in length in the U.S., its water volume has averaged only 15 million acre-feet of water yearly since 1905. (The Columbia empties 192 million and the Mississippi more then 400 million).

Depression/Recovery COLORADO return Colorado, one of the Mountain states of the United States, is a landlocked, rectangular territory. It is bordered by six states: Wyoming and Nebraska on the north, Utah on the west, New Mexico and Oklahoma on the south, and Kansas on the east. Permanent human occupation of the area dates back at least 10,000 years. Spanish exploratory expeditions beginning in the early 16th century left no settlements, and it was not until the discovery of gold in 1858 that Colorado received its first modern permanent settlement. Encyclopedia Colorado, state, United States Geography Colorado's eastern expanses are part of the High Plains section of the Great Plains . On their western edge the plains give way to the Rocky Mountains , which run north-south through central Colorado. The mountains are divided into several ranges that make up two generally parallel belts, with the Front Range and a portion of the Sangre de Cristo Mts. on the east and the Park Range, Sawatch Mts., and San Juan Mts. on the west. Mt. Elbert (14,433 ft/4,399 m) is the highest peak in the U.S. Rocky Mts. The mountain ranges are separated by high valleys and basins called parks. These include North Park, Middle Park, South Park, Estes Park, and San Luis Park. The Continental Divide runs north-south along the Rocky Mts. in Colorado. One of the most scenic states in the country, Colorado has recreational parks including Rocky Mountain National Park, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park with its narrow gorge cut by the Gunnison River, Dinosaur National Monument in NW Colorado, and Great Sand Dunes National Monument in S central Colorado. Mesa Verde National Park, once the home of Anasazi cliff dwellers , is in the southwestern corner of the state, a beautiful but formidable area of mesas and canyons.
