DR. COLORADO'S BOOKS Historical Atlas of Colorado This unique historical atlas will help you to comprehend quickly Colorado's geography and its fascinating past from the prehistoric Indian cultures to the modern metropolises, from the Spanish and French explorers to the modern ski resorts. The full-page, clearly drawn maps and the lively text provide easy access to the essential information about the Highest State. Compiled by three leading authorities on Colorado history and geography, this atlas is designed for both students and tourists. Scholars will profit from the maps of little-known phenomena such as the earliest county lines and the explorers' routes. Weekend tourists will learn to follow old wagon trails, stagecoach lines, and narrow-guage railroads to ghost towns, historic districts, literary landmarks, quaint bed-and-breakfasts, and other attractions. For easy use, the atlas is well organized into sections on geography, political boundaries, mining, transportation, settlement and urbanization, and recreational and historic areas. The extensive references for each of the sixty maps are a gold mine of detailed and esoteric literature. No Colorado traveler, whether in an armchair or hiking in the back country, should be without the

Nivola, Senior Fellow of the Brookings Institute says: Yet, the chances that a terrorist attack could turn any U.S. nuclear installation into a Chernobyl are practically nil. Concern would be better directed at hardening other sites, like commercial chemical plants. (About as many people died in 1984 when methyl isocyanate leaked from a plant in Bhopal, India, as perished in the World Trade Center.) You can find out more about the risks chemical facilities in your neighborhood pose by clicking here and requesting a copy of the executive summary of the Risk Management Plan (RMP).

Introduction Colorado Model Geography Standards Everything exists in space. Geography's* concern is space. Geography uses a spatial perspective to study the location , arrangement, and interaction of people, places , and environments over Earth space . By understanding and using the spatial perspective geography offers, students can study facts, issues, and ideas in depth. People everywhere have a need to know about the nature of their world, beginning with themselves. Therefore, geography has to do with both asking questions and solving problems, as well as memorization of facts. Geography is composed of three interrelated and inseparable components: knowledge, skills, and perspectives. Investigating the geographic dimension of human experience begins with asking the following:
    • Where is it?

Setting Great Sand Dunes National Monument is located in south-central Colorado at the base of the the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range. It is situated along the eastern edge of the remote, high-mountain San Luis Valley of the Colorado Rockies. Sitting at an elevation of 8,200 feet, the Monument receives only 10 inches of precipitation annually, constituting a true desert climate.
Climate In fall, winter, and spring, expect moderate daytime temperatures and freezing to sub-zero temperatures at night. Summer temperatures during the day average 70 to 80 degrees F, lows may drop to 40 degrees. Sand temperatures can reach 140 degrees in summer; shoes are highly recommended for hiking the dunes. At such a a high elevation, temperatures can change dramatically. Even during the summer, warm layered clothing is recommended for protection against the sun and wind. Frigid temperatures are the norm in winter, even though sunshine is generally abundant ; the lowest temperature recorded in the Great Sand Dunes is -25 degrees, in 1963; and the hottest temperature recorded is 96 degrees, in 1982. The Great Sand Dunes receives an average annual precipitation of 10 inches. Thundershowers are common in July and August and high winds may prevail anytime. Beware of lightning storms when exploring the dunes. The town of Alamosa, approximately 35 miles southeast, receives only 7 inches of precipitation a year. The Great Sand Dunes receives an average snowfall of 37 inches, with the heaviest snowfall during March. January is the coolest month of the year and July is the warmest.
