Introduction
This FAQ addresses a few of the most commonly asked questions about coin collecting. It is intended only as an introduction to the hobby. Years of research and even entire careers have been devoted to in depth study of specialized topics, and many detailed reference works have been published (a few are listed in Part 2). While some of the material is applicable to other numismatic collectibles, the emphasis here is on coins. In some cases, more complete information is provided for U.S. coins. NUMISMATICS AND THE BRITISH COIN

Welcome to the world of numismatics - British coin collecting is a fantastic way to own a token piece of history whether you are a collector of ancient coins, rare coins or specific British coin designs, sovereigns or piedfort, produced by the Royal Mint. UK coins struck in gold, silver, palladium and platinum are especially of numismatic interest, as are those UK coins that are uncirculated and finished to proof standard - struck, etched and polished to give a mirror-like finish. A UK coin is a document of its time - with numismatics you can travel through time as each coin is a piece of history in the palm of your hand. Rare coins and ancient coins are extra special, making coin collecting more intriguing. The challenge of finding rare coins, and the careful cleaning of ancient coins to reveal their worth and status make coin collecting and numismatics in general an exciting pursuit.

Coin Collecting for Beginners
I've been collecting coins sporadically since I was a little kid. Once I started surfing the web, I expected to find tons of helpful sites. There are many excellent sites out there (see the links page), but I was surprised that relatively few of them cater to beginners. This site will offer advice for newbies on how to get started, how to pursue this hobby even on a low budget, and some suggestions for those who already have some experience in the hobby but want to renew or expand their interest. The trade list is still a little strange- I'm working on that. I am now accepting trade offers again, but I've been very busy with coursework lately so don't be offended if I don't reply right away. I'm currently working on re-scanning most of the coins in my image gallery; some of the files are getting corrupted from age and use. The new files will be in GIF format so they will take a little more time to load, but they shouldn't degrade over time like the jpegs do.

Wednesday - April 02, 2003 spidered by a poodle If you create a new web site and want to get listed in Google, it would be wise to fix any potential problems. How can you tell what problems there might be? By using the poodle predictor of course. (via evolt One of the reasons I prefer not to use frames, javascript, images, or flash for essential portions of a web site (like the navigation) is because of the problems spiders have when indexing them. If you have one big image for your front page, it may look great to human visitors, but the arachnids will see nothing at all, unless you make the alt text very descriptive, but it's still not likely to capture the entire message of the site. Simply put, text is good. It may seem simplistic, old, and boring but text can be resized, spidered, searched, read out loud, seen in text mode, viewed with older browsers and the list goes on and on. The drawback is that your site may not be as flashy, but how many of you use Google because you like the pretty colors of the logo? If you go back to the basics with quality content in text form, search engines will show their approval with a steady stream of traffic. In a nutshell, spiders love text.
