ABOUT AMAZON PARROTS
Of all the choices mankind has for non-human companionship, birds are rapidly becoming the most popular. Those of the parrot family are the ones that are the most naturally suited to becoming part of the human family. Many people consider the Amazon parrot the world's greatest pet. They point out that their size is perfect, and their talent for talking is rarely surpassed. Their intelligence can be astounding, their colors brilliant and their sense of humor never-ending.
The first thing to do after making the decision to have an Amazon as a companion is to determine which type. There are many varieties available: The yellow-crowned varieties include the yellow-nape, double yellowhead, yellow front and Panama. The blue-fronted which are the Brazilian blue front and the yellow-winged or Chaco blue front. Then there are the lilac crowned, orange wings, Mexican redheads (green-cheeked), yellow cheeks, mealies, and white fronts.
Amazons should be fed a varied diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. A diet of only "parrot mix" (containing primarily sunflower seeds, peanuts, hard corn and dried red peppers) is unhealthy for Amazons and will eventually lead to malnutrition and related problems. Seeds or pelleted diets may comprise a portion of an Amazon's diet, but this bird's high requirement for vitamin A makes dark green and yellow/orange vegetables such as broccoli, zucchini, carrots, yams and yellow squash important dietary items. Other foods such as sprouted seeds, nuts, rice, dog kibble, fruits, boiled corn and/or wheat and parboiled beans and peas are excellent. A vitamin/mineral powder should be added to the soft foods.

Cockatoos account for 17 of the 330 known species of parrots. These species once occurred naturally in Australia, New Guinea, the islands of Indonesia, the Solomon Islands, and the Philippines. The Australian species include the Greater Sulfur Crested, the Gang Gang, Galah (Rose Breasted) Leadbeaters (Major Mitchell's), Bare-eyed, Slenderbilled (Longbilled), Glossy Black, Red-tailed Black, Yellow-tailed Black, White-tailed Black, and the Black Palm. The Indonesian, New Guinea, and other island species include the Umbrella, Lesser Sulfur, Citron, Moluccan, Goffins, Triton, Eleonora, Blue-eyed, Ducrops, and Red-vented.
All cockatoos have moveable crest feathers. Cockatoos not only differ from other parrots because they are crested, but for a few exceptions, they are either black or white. This is caused by the lack of the Dyck texture in their feathers. In other parrots the presence of this feature produces color by the way it reflects light. Cockatoos also lack oil glands, but they do produce a fine powder which is the result of the breakdown of their down feathers. You can always tell if there's a cockatoo in the house look at the TV; it has white powder on the screen. A word of warning this powder can aggravate respiratory problems in some people.
Domestically bred hand-fed babies acquired just after weaning make the best pets. Unweaned babies (still eating formula) can cost less but it is best to let experienced individuals handle the weaning process properly. The larger species, such as the Greater Sulfur Crested or the Moluccan could cost from $1800 to $3000. Smaller members of this group can run from $800 up to $1800.

Title: The Cockatoos Author: Patrick White Genre: Stories Written: Length: 284 pages Availability: out of print
  • A collection of six shorter novels and stories.
  • The story The Night the Prowler was made into a movie by Jim Sharman (the director of The Rocky Horror Picture Show ) in 1978.

Review Summaries Source Rating Date Reviewer The Observer Russell Davies - Return to top of the page - The complete review 's Review Patrick White's collection of six shorter novels and stories is a fairly somber collection. White compresses the lives he describes into the pages of each tale (in contrast to his expansive novels), without losing substance. In his long novels he is able to offer more, but his talents also shine in the short form. These are, however, fairly dark tales. The eighty-page A Woman's Hand tells the story of the retired Fazackerley's, and the reappearance of a figure from their past, Clem Dowson. They had known one another years earlier in Egypt, under somewhat unusual circumstances. White fleshes out the complex relationships and figures marvelously in the vivid small slices of life he offers here. The complicated personalities are, as usual with White, all too human, and none completely sympathetic, but White captures their whole lives in this short novel. It lingers darkly in the mind.

William T. Cooper
Presented in Original Size
With Accompaning Text by
Joseph M. Forshaw
A Collectors Edition of 460 Sets Published 2001 In 1997 Nokomis Editions published Turacos: A portfolio of all Species . This was the first part of a two-part project aimed at reproducing William T. Cooper's work to the highest possible publishing standards. We hoped that viewers seeing the plates could imagine themselves looking at a just-completed painting on the easel in Bill's studio. Cockatoos: A Portfolio of all Specie s contains. twenty-one plates and concludes this two-part project, showing Bill Cooper's exquisite water/colours once again in full size. His love for cockatoos is obvious and his mastery deserves this elegant presentation. One of Bill's many artistic strengths is his careful attention to habitats and bird-plant associations, which is sensitively portrayed in each painting. These wonderful birds of the forests and plains have all been painted in landscape format, allowing him to show more diverse compositions and postures. The accompanying text by Joseph M. Forshaw departs from his usual style and forms an elegant essay interspersed with the plates, along with Bill Cooper's Artists Notes. The Introduction is written by Stephen Garnett, a leading researcher on Australia's endangered cockatoos:
