Reasons for Hope: You Can Challenge Educational Inequities
By Julian Weissglass Inequity in education has many causes and correlates, but one important element is often left out. Racism is hard to discuss and its devastating effects hard to understand, but there are ways to begin the conversation and start the healing. (more)
    Networking for Success
By Don Austin A computer program originally used to help failing seniors recover credits quickly becomes an integral part of one school's curriculum and instruction. Two years ago, the use of technology at La Sierra High School in Riverside, CA, was similar to that of most schools across the United States. A Digital High School grant had enabled our school to devise and implement a plan to increase the use of technology to improve student achievement. (more)
Military Student Transfer Susan is a high school senior whose father, an army lieutenant, was recently deployed to the Middle East, prompting Susan and her mother to return to their hometown. It’s March, and Susan enrolls in your school. She is, by all accounts, and outstanding student, college bound and intelligent. However, your block-scheduled school requires 30 credits for graduation-more than the school with a traditional seven-period schedule from which Susan transferred-and it will be impossible for her to earn that number by the end of the year. How would you resolve this situation?

How to Set Up a School Web Club
    1. Decide what structure you want to have for the club.
    • Will it be a formal school organization? Will it be a class posting work in collaboration with their teacher? Will the "club" be simply a student or two helping out the school webmaster?
If you're going to have a regular school club, review the procedures for setting up a club in your school district. In general, you will need a teacher/advisor. You may also need to get approval from an administrator and fill out paperwork. If you plan to put student work on the school web site, you will need to set the club up in collaboration with the official school webmanager. 2. Awards for Web Clubs and Club Members
Winning awards can inspire students and help recognize the work they put in on web sites. Money may be available from parent organizations for small awards to recognize outstanding contributions to the school site. Certificates to acknowledge achieving milestones in learning to construct pages and sites may also be appropriate. Some interesting certificates can be created free online at the Certificate Creator site. These might be given out for achievements during the year or at awards school awards ceremonies. Awards Available on the Web There are numerous awards available on the web. Some offer only recognition and a button. Others include T-Shirts, money, and other incentives. Generally winning awards also helps to publicize the school both across the Internet and in local announcements. The following partial listing will give web club members and advisors a place to start in applying for award recognition. Note: some web clubs also decide to set up their own award to recognize sites or individuals that they feel have contributed significant value to their own site or the web in general.

The Use of Public School Facilities by Religious Clubs or Groups: Guidelines for School Districts General Guidelines: Secondary Schools During school hours: A religious group may meet only if it otherwise complies with the Equal Access Act. That is to say, if the school allows non-curriculum related clubs (e.g., a service club), the school must allow religious clubs, but only if they are student-run, student-initiated clubs that meet during non-curriculum time. There may be no faculty or outside control over the group (beyond maintaining routine order and control). After school hours: An outside religious club or organization may meet in the school under the following circumstances:
    • If the group is student-initiated and student-run, it may meet pursuant to the Equal Access Act. The group may meet only if the school allows other outside clubs or organizations to meet at the same time.

The Use of Public School Facilities by Religious Clubs or Groups: Guidelines for School Districts Introduction In June, 2001, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a Christian youth group that teaches children to "give God first place" in their lives must be allowed to meet in public schools after class hours. What does the Court's decision in Good News v. Milford require from elementary and secondary school officials? What is the current state of the law regarding the use of public school facilities by religious clubs or groups? Educators and parents are encouraged to call their local ADL regional office to discuss these matters further. While the questions that may arise can be difficult, the underlying principle is fairly simple: a school district must never, in whatever it does, appear to endorse or disapprove of religion. Of course, what 'endorsement' or 'disapproval' means in practice depends heavily on the context of the activity at issue. As an educator or a parent, you must constantly ask yourself: would the average person think, from looking at what the school is doing, that the school is communicating a message in favor of or against religion? If the answer to this question is yes, then the activity is impermissible. Next: General Guidelines - Elementary Schools

    Library Facilities
UCL supports the teaching and research of the Medical School by providing library facilities on all sites where undergraduate teaching takes place. Textbooks both for reference and loan are housed principally in the three Bloomsbury Libraries - The Cruciform Li brary, the Bloomsbury Science Library and the Boldero Library and in the Royal Free library. There is also a multidisciplinary library at the Whittington Hospital on the Archway campus. For project work on subjects not covered in depth by the College libraries, students have ready access to a wide range of specialist collections in central London, which is one of the many advantages of studying in London. The libraries are all open by 9.30am; closing times vary during the year and from site to site, but during the undergraduate term there is access to at least one of the Bloomsbury libraries until 10.00pm and on Saturdays.
