Phuket Travel Information, Thailand Phuket Weather
Click here for up-to-date current weather and 5-day forecasts. Phuket has a tropical monsoon climate. It's warm all year 'round, but the two periods of April-May and September-October are the hottest. The September-October period is also the wettest. The best time to visit Phuket is during the cool NE monsoon season, from November though March, when it isn't so humid, and the cool breezes keep things comfortable. The average temperature is around 75ºF to 89ºF (24ºC to 32ºC). The hottest time is from April through May, with temperatures ranging from 80ºF to 95ºF (27ºC to 36ºC). There are frequent short heavy thundery showers, offering welcome relief from the temperature and humidity. The Thai New Year occurs on April 13 th and everyone sprinkles (or throws) cool water on each other. No wonder!

Our Changing Atmosphere
Energy from the sun drives the earth's weather and climate, and heats the earth's surface; in turn, the earth radiates energy back into space. Atmospheric greenhouse gases (water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other gases) trap some of the outgoing energy, retaining heat somewhat like the glass panels of a greenhouse.
Without this natural "greenhouse effect," temperatures would be much lower than they are now, and life as known today would not be possible. Instead, thanks to greenhouse gases, the earth's average temperature is a more hospitable 60°F. However, problems may arise when the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases increases.
Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide have increased nearly 30%, methane concentrations have more than doubled, and nitrous oxide concentrations have risen by about 15%. These increases have enhanced the heat-trapping capability of the earth's atmosphere. Sulfate aerosols, a common air pollutant, cool the atmosphere by reflecting light back into space; however, sulfates are short-lived in the atmosphere and vary regionally.
Why are greenhouse gas concentrations increasing? Scientists generally believe that the combustion of fossil fuels and other human activities are the primary reason for the increased concentration of carbon dioxide. Plant respiration and the decomposition of organic matter release more than 10 times the CO

(PDF format)
WWF has led international efforts to conserve nature and protect the diversity of life on Earth for over 40 years, and we believe in addressing the source of the global warming problem. Global warming is caused by emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases that blanket the world and trap in heat. The major source of CO emissions is burning coal, oil and gas. WWF's goal is to ensure that industrialized nations set in motion a permanent downward trend in their domestic emissions of CO as a first step toward substantial reductions by 2010. The year 1998 was the warmest year ever measured globally in history and all ten of the warmest years ever measured worldwide over the last 120 years occurred after 1981. The six warmest of these years all occurred after 1990. This human-induced climate change threatens the survival of many plants and animals as well as the well-being of people around the world. Clearly we must address this problem now using available solutions and technologies that reduce CO

Climate Variability and Change

The National Assessment of the Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change is a landmark in the major ongoing effort to understand what climate change means for the United States. The Assessment was called for by a 1990 law, and has been conducted under the US Global Change Research Program in response to a request from the President’s Science Advisor. This site contains the final approved version of the report of the National Assessment Synthesis Team, which was a federal advisory committee made up of experts drawn from government, universities, industry, and non-governmental organizations. The report is provided in two parts: (1) an Overview report, and (2) a Foundation report that provides additional detail and full references. These two national-level, peer-reviewed documents synthesize results from studies conducted by regional and sector teams, and from the broader scientific literature. More information on the National Assessment and how it was conducted is available at http://www.nacc.usgcrp.gov
