Climate problems tend to be regional in scale. That is, climate anomalies such as droughts, heat waves, and blizzards typically affect an area larger than one state but not the entire country at one time. The National Climatic Data Center's Regional Climate Centers Program was developed to meet local and regional needs for climate data, research-based information, and expertise. A nationwide network of six regional centers provides convenient and timely access to accurate and reliable climate information. These centers also monitor and report current climate conditions in the regions they serve. The expertise and data resources of the Regional Climate Centers are available to assist in interpreting present conditions, quantifying climate variability, and assessing the likelihood of extreme weather events that often produce major social, economic and environmental impacts in a region. Regional Climate Centers serve as a resource for state and local government agencies, businesses, public utilities, professionals, and private citizens. Climate data and information is essential in the planning and management of capital projects, settling insurance claims and legal disputes, and reducing risks associated with climate anomalies. Climate analyses can help in mitigating the effects of (or taking advantage of) climate variability in scheduling activities such as the transportation of materials and the production and marketing of seasonal products and services.

NOAA manages global data bases for meteorology, oceanography, solid earth geophysics, and solarterrestrial sciences. From these sources, it develops and provides environmental data and information products and services. NOAA gathers global data about the oceans, Earth, air, space, and sun and their interactions to describe and predict the state of the physical environment. Climate-At-A-Glance Search 107 years of archived weather data for the United States. Climate Prediction Center is responsible for assessing and forecasting the impacts of short-term climate variability, emphasizing enhanced risks of weather-related extreme events, for use in mitigating losses and maximizing economic gains. Drought Termination and Amelioration NOAA calculates how much precipitation it will take to end droughts across the USA. National Climatic Data Center - is the world's largest active archive of weather data. It also includes the NOAA paleoclimatology program. The center produces numerous climate publications and responds to data requests from all over the world. It operates the World Data Center for Meteorology, in Asheville, North Carolina. Climate Diagnostics Center - identifies the nature and causes of climate variations on time scales ranging from a month to centuries. The goal of this work is to develop the ability to predict important climate variations on these time scales.

Climate Change Prediction Program (formerly CHAMMP)
The Climate Change Prediction Program (formerly CHAMMP ) program is a Department of Energy program to rapidly advance the science of decade and longer scale climate prediction. A major component of the CHAMMP program links the emerging technologies in High Performance Computing to the development of computationally efficient and numerically accurate climate prediction models. Sponsored by the Office of Biological and Environmental Research (OBER) , the program involves a joint laboratory-university effort to develop computational methods and simulation capabilities for future atmosphere and ocean general circulation models. These computer programs will form the core of advanced prediction models that can be used to study climate change. Projects are classed in two groups, Science Team and Development Team projects. The Development Teams are charged with implementing particular state-of-the-art atmosphere and ocean general circulation models (and coupled models) on high performance parallel computers. The development teams have contributed to several coupled model projects through interagency collaborations with the focus on studying the utility of high resolution, eddy resolving ocean models for the coupled climate system. The image on the header is sea surface temperature output from an eddy resolving ocean model (the POP code) generated on a massively parallel computer at Los Alamos National Laboratory. 70. NOAA Paleoclimatology Program - Orbital Variations And Milankovitch Theory
NOAA Paleoclimatology Program educational material concerning the Milankovitch theory, which explains changes in the seasons as a result of changes in the earth's orbit around the sun.
http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov:80/paleo/milankovitch.html
Astronomical Theory of Climate Change What is The Milankovitch Theory? The Milankovitch or astronomical theory of climate change is an explanation for changes in the seasons which result from changes in the earth's orbit around the sun. The theory is named for Serbian astronomer Milutin Milankovitch, who calculated the slow changes in the earth's orbit by careful measurements of the position of the stars, and through equations using the gravitational pull of other planets and stars. He determined that the earth "wobbles" in its orbit. The earth's "tilt" is what causes seasons, and changes in the tilt of the earth change the strength of the seasons. The seasons can also be accentuated or modified by the eccentricity (degree of roundness) of the orbital path around the sun, and the precession effect, the position of the solstices in the annual orbit. What does The Milankovitch Theory say about future climate change?
Orbital changes occur over thousands of years, and the climate system may also take thousands of years to respond to orbital forcing. Theory suggests that the primary driver of ice ages is the total summer radiation received in northern latitude zones where major ice sheets have formed in the past, near 65 degrees north. Past ice ages correlate well to 65N summer insolation (Imbrie 1982). Astronomical calculations show that 65N summer insolation should increase gradually over the next 25,000 years, and that no 65N summer insolation declines sufficient to cause an ice age are expected in the next 100,000 years

For the past 140 years, U.S. oil and gas companies have been helping to improve the quality of life in the United States by making it possible for people to live in harmony with our nation's variable and, sometimes, not-so-friendly climate. Our products keep homes warm in winter and cool in summer. They help parents get their children to school and themselves to work. We supply the fuels that help farmers sow and reap their crops and transport them to market. Oil and natural gas are ingredients in medicines, crop fertilizers, fabrics, and plastics. Airplanes fly, trains roll down the tracks, and buses speed along the highway powered by our products. In short, the energy born of oil and natural gas products enables all of us to live our lives with relative ease and comfort, year-round, through all kinds of weather. Recently, scientists have been debating whether the burning of oil and natural gas products and coal are affecting the climate of our globe and

If you'd like to "change the climate" around marijuana to keep your kids safe from hard drugs, to save thousands of your tax dollars, and to stop the senseless arrest of millions, then support Change the Climate. It's a campaign, founded by parents and business professionals, to educate the public about the tremendous waste of our tax dollars for the "war on marijuana" and the increasing threat to our basic civil liberties. Our goal is to tell the truth about marijuana to de-demonize it so that someday, politicians will support marijuana reform legislation. Support us now and help us tell the truth. Like other drugs, marijuana is NOT for kids. But providing inaccurate information about marijuana in the form of "shock ads" only discredits adults and our efforts to curb marijuana use by young people. Click here for ideas on how to talk to your kids about marijuana. Change the Climate's advertising campaign is an effective way to change attitudes and bring marijuana reform directly to the people billboards and banner ads reach different people than NY Times and New Republic ads. Politicians will NOT make any effort to change unjust, wasteful and unconstitutional marijuana laws until it's clear that people are fed up with these laws. Since 1996, medical marijuana initiatives have been passed by a majority of voters in eight states and the District of Columbia and no state has ever rejected a medical marijuana initiative. Currently, one in five voters in the U.S. lives in a state where marijuana is legal for medicinal purposes.

The Mars Climate Orbiter was lost at the Red Planet nearly seven weeks ago because the mission's navigation team was unfamiliar with the spacecraft. It lacked training, and failed to detect a mistake by outside engineers who delivered navigation information in English rather than metric units, according to a mission failure investigation report released Wednesday. A litany of errors and problems led to the loss of the $125 million spacecraft on Sept. 23, a loss that has complicated an upcoming Mars landing mission, the report says. The report was released Wednesday during a press conference at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. More Stories
