NEW TOOLS: The future is now (2001 version)
Today, one dot.com boom and one dot.bust later, much that is said here is now taken for granted. What is worth noticing is how little the paradigm What will begin to change the paradigm? My suspicion (October 2001) is that wireless handheld devices (like the little Blackberry palm-filler that I read e-mail on surreptitiously during business meetings) will change people's habits noticeably but not as much as the original net invasion did. What lies beyond? What indeed. At Penn, more faculty than ever use many of these tools. In 1999, we put together a campus-wide project, also called "New Tools for Teaching," which brought together faculty and staff from all twelve of Penn's schools to design a common environment for the most current tools of technologically assisted teaching and learning. That project maintains a website which all readers of these pages should explore. For now, we use "Blackboard", and guests may see part of what we do at http://courseweb.upenn.edu

Teach Space workshop sparks interest and enthusiasm
6 March 2003
Twenty primary school teachers and education experts from ten countries gathered at ESA’s Research and Technology Centre, ESTEC, for the Teach Space in Primary Education Workshop on 3 and 4 March. The main objective of the workshop was for ESA to better understand how they can support teachers in primary education.
In order to meet the needs of teachers throughout all ESA Member States, the first day of the workshop was dedicated to identifying common elements of the European curricula. The teachers presented their curricula and brainstormed about the topics they teach. As a result of this exercise, some common elements were identified.
Hard at work during the 'brown paper' session

During the second day, different types of educational tools were discussed. The teachers were asked to give advice on both printed educational material and multimedia educational tools. As teaching methods and practises vary throughout Europe, the teachers urged ESA to keep the future teaching tools diverse.

Collaboration in the Classroom and Over the Internet
written by Yvonne Marie Andres
email yvonne@globalschoolnet.org
Why Collaboration is Important
Significant global changes are rapidly occurring and political boundaries are becoming less distinct. Certain issues such as the environment, terrorism, and inflation affect all populations of all countries. Job market skills and employment requirements are changing. Communication skills are becoming essential to earning a living, yet American students are not coming to the workforce adequately prepared. The Internet offers one of the most exciting and effective ways to teach students how to both communicate and collaborate by connecting teams of students with other classrooms around the world. The creation of "telecommunities" can unite students and teach them to work cooperatively. Collaborative learning becomes even more significant when the students who are working together are from different nations with varied cultures, histories, and socio-political beliefs. Yet, little has been written about how to prepare students to work in teams over the Internet.
Students as Collaborators
Although, the best collaborative projects can be designed to have students measure, collect, evaluate, write, read, publish, simulate, hypothesize, compare, debate, examine, investigate, organize, share, and report, it's important to remember that not all students need to be doing the same thing at the same time. Ideally, the class is divided into several teams or "crews" comprised of four or five students each. The teacher assigns each crew member a job title and a responsibility according to the student's individual talent or strength.

Telecommunications In The Classroom:
Keys to Successful Telecomputing
by Al Rogers, Yvonne Andres, Mary Jacks, and Tom Clauset
[This article appeared in The Computing Teacher in 1990, Volume 17, Number 8, pages 25-28.] A condensation of this article, How to Design a Successful Project , has been widely circulated on various newsgroups and lists ever since. For some teachers, telecommunications expands the horizons of their classroom, opening the doors to real audiences and exciting interactive activities from locations around the country and the World. These teachers know its capacity to motivate students and involve them in productive learning experiences. Many others, however, fail to realize this potential power. For every successful long-distance learning experience you hear about, you are bound to hear others testify, "I tried that, and it didn't work." Articles and conference presentations are often guilty of hyperbole. The author or presenter has had successful telecomputing experiences and relates glowing reports of life-changing online communications with distant colleagues, and how these experiences improved their classes. It is easy to be beguiled with such evangelistic accounts. Yet many novices are often frustrated, discouraged, and disillusioned with the actual use of this "powerful, exciting" technology. Much of this frustration is due to the learning curve imposed by the current state of technology in the classroom. There are still a myriad of technical obstacles to overcome in preparing to use computers, modems, and phone lines in the classroom.

Adobe Enables Teachers Nationwide to Deliver Technology Software Education to Students State of Texas Joins Growing List of Teacher Training Programs Nationwide Using Breadth of Adobe Products to "Leave no Child Behind" SAN JOSE, Calif.—February 4, 2003 (NASDAQ: ADBE)— Adobe Systems Incorporated, the leader in network publishing, today announced that it has been selected to provide software for the Technology Applications Certification Program (TACP), a K-12 teacher training initiative dedicated to advancing technology in Texas classrooms. Supporting a statewide mandate, the full scope of Adobe products will serve as the foundation for improving the technology aptitude of 1,200 Texas educators developing high-tech curricula for students. The State of Texas joins school districts and programs nationwide that are implementing Adobe software in the classroom to close the digital divide. According to the National School Board Foundation, teachers at 90 percent of the nation's largest school districts lack technology training in the classroom. Responding to this need, the state of Texas developed the TCAP with a $2.2 million grant, giving teachers in low-income communities software instruction to incorporate technology courses into their curriculum. As part of the two-year certification program, teachers will learn Adobe's print and Web publishing and graphics products, allowing them to teach Web, desktop publishing, video, graphics, and animation courses. The program, ensuring that every Texas school district has technologically savvy teachers, is being facilitated through the Texas Center for Educational Technology (TCET) and the University of North Texas.

76. History Of The English Department CAI Program
to help composition instructors use the tools of instructional technology to betterteach and communicate presented by a small classroom in Olson
http://cai.ucdavis.edu/caihistory.html
A Short History of the English Department's
Computer Aided Instruction Program
(formerly The Computers and Composition Program)
Written by Andy Jones, CAI Coordinator
The English Department's Computer Aided Instruction Program exists to support the teaching of writing in on-campus computer classrooms, and to help composition instructors use the tools of instructional technology to better teach and communicate with students. The CAI Program was founded in 1986 by a single lecturer who recognized the pedagogical opportunity presented by a small classroom in Olson Hall and a closet full of unused Apple computers. The program has grown steadily since then: currently the Composition Program offers classes in at least five computer classrooms every quarter; and about two-thirds of our upper-division classes are taught in the computer classroom. The CAI Program is coordinated by a Composition Program Lecturer.
History of the Program

The English Department's Computer Aided Instruction Program began when composition faculty recognized the power of new word-processing programs to show students the process of writing. From brainstorming for content and connections between ideas, to rearranging entire paragraphs to restructure the presentation of those ideas, to revising individual sentences for clarity and economy, word processors and projection hardware allowed writing instructors to model and display the act of writing, thus emphasizing the importance of the writing and revising process.

Nurturing Great Minds
How to recognize a gifted child

Bella Kranz is the author of the Kranz Talent Identification Instrument (KTII), a method for identifying gifted and talented students used by school districts across the country. The KTII is based not on standardized testing but on teacher observation, and Kranz contends that once teachers know the tell-tale signs, they can easily recognize the gifted and talented.
"They're the first ones finished with their regular work or they don't do any of the regular work, but their achievement scores are in the 90th percentile," she says. "They're always occupied in what might be called 'doodling' cartoons, crossword puzzles, mental chess. They daydream. They can operate on two levels at the same time. They may seem to be ignoring you, but later you discover that they've heard every word. Or they concentrate so intensely it might look like they're daydreaming that they don't notice anything. They may not hand in any of their written work, but when you ask them about the subject, they can deliver a five-minute diatribe. They ask a lot of questions questions that may seem irrelevant, but they're not!"
Remember, Kranz concludes, "Not all gifted children are getting good grades or behaving like model students. You're not looking for academic prowess, you're identifying behaviors."
