Instruction that Promotes Appropriate Behavior
Here is a checklist to use as you design and teach lessons so that the lesson will promote appropriate behavior.
  • Expectations are clear.
  • Instruction is interesting to students.
  • Students see purpose and value of instruction.
  • Instruction relates concepts or skills to student's experience. This is part of constructivist teaching
  • Teaching strategies are varied. Students can become bored, even if the topic is interesting, if the teacher is constantly using the same methods for instruction.

first-year teaching and self-evaluation of interest!

Phyllis (a new teacher) provided the spark for the MiddleWeb listserv's first extended conversation about discipline and classroom management. It is, of course, a conversation that never ends, and we will continue to add fresh conversations to this file as they appear on the list.
I go in well planned, but the students need much self-discipline and many a time the period is spent working on classroom management. I must admit, it's not all their fault. I don't know what I'm doing!!!!!
With the exception of one observation by my assistant principal., followed by a class taught by the resource teacher, I have been left to fend for myself. OK. But tell me. What's the procedure. Does anyone have to put on the board a "Do Now" assignment? When do you check homework? How do I start a writing journal?
Right now I've been working on literature. It's taken too long, (almost 4 weeks), to read a short story. I'm certified to teach, but heck, can someone tell me how to go about doing it? No curriculum. No chalk! I've been asking my hubbie to bring me chalk from the high school he teaches in.

New Teacher SOS
We turned the tables and asked new middle grades teachers to describe their biggest problems after a few weeks on the job. Veteran teachers at our MiddleWeb Listserv offered suggestions. First-Year Teaching / Part One: A MiddleWeb Listserv conversation If anyone doubts the power of listserv conversation to support teachers and good teaching practice, they only need to read this string. This chat began when Phyllis wrote about her struggles as a first-year teacher. As the conversation progressed, the discussion turned to talk of self-videotaping as a method of improving one's practice. And a spinoff conversation took up the topic of teacher induction and mentoring programs. New teachers are always welcome at the listserv to ask for advice and share experiences.

49. Management
Then I will go into some depth elaborating on the classroom management techniquesthat I think will be most effective in the class I plan to teach.
http://web.csuchico.edu/~psb/management.html
Peter S Bothwell
Classroom Management
“Management refers to teachers’ strategies that create and maintain an orderly learning environment, whereas discipline involves teacher responses to student misbehavior, such as talking inappropriately, leaving desks without permission, making hostile or sarcastic remarks, or more seriously, fighting and assaults.” (David A. Jacobsen, p259) Overview
As I prepare for a career teaching high school level Digital Media Arts, there are many “classroom management” concerns that I want to address beforehand. The following proposition is an attempt to develop a classroom management strategy. To begin with, I will describe the basic characteristics of the students I plan to teach. Then I will go into some depth elaborating on the classroom management techniques that I think will be most effective in the class I plan to teach. The age of the students I plan to teach will range from 15-19 years old. There will probably be a wide gap between students who are computer literate and those who are not. Also, the students will vary with regard to their interest in Digital Media Arts – some will be eager to create, and others will care less. With such a diverse population of students, it will be imperative that I teach in a style that is versatile and inclusive. Earning the Respect of the Students Part of being an effective teacher is earning the respect of students. Teachers can earn the respect of their students in several ways. Some of the ways I will attempt to earn their respect include: careful and thorough planning of the topics being taught, using a discipline strategy that doesn’t degrade their self-esteem, providing appropriate rewards, giving them sincere praise, and presenting clear expectations. By demonstrating a teaching attitude that embodies a sense of caring, firmness, enthusiasm, democracy, and high expectation, a teacher can demonstrate their commitment to students. I am not saying this is a flawless approach, but it seems like a logical approach towards achieving the desired effect.

http://www.iloveteaching.com/1stdays/management/procedures/
How to Have Students Follow Classroom Procedures The number one problem in the classroom is not discipline; it is the lack of procedures and routines. - Wong Classroom management is not the same thing as discipline. Discipline is only a small part of classroom management. How seriously you take this page will determine whether you have a chaotic or a well oiled learning environment, whether you will leave each school day frazzled and angry or happy and successful. Discipline: can be seen by students as a DARE to be broken, it concerns how student behave and has penalties and rewards.
Procedures: is a DO, a step to be learned, and concerns how things are done. There are NO penalties or rewards. It is the procedures that set the class up for achievement to take place. Wong says there are four reasons that procedures are important: (page 170)
  • Classroom procedures are statements of student expectations necessary to participate successfully in classroom activities, to learn, and to function effectively in the school environment. Classroom procedures allow many different activities to take place efficiently during the school day, often several at the same time, with a minimum of wasted time and confusion.

Curriculum Issues That Affect Classroom Management
    By: Lynn Hoyer
Lynn Hoyer is a teacher and coach at Rancocas Valley Regional High School. On March 22, 2002, Rowan University's Education Institute sponsored a conference on Curriculum Issues that Affect Classroom Management. Participants indicated the information presented was quite useful to new educators, as many sessions covered topics relevant to teachers who are always dealing with a myriad of classroom management issues. All the presenters were highly qualified, and they skillfully "educated" participants on topics such as Management Issues in the Inclusion Classroom, Curriculum Development as it Affects Classroom Management, and Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum, just to name a few. The professional manner of everyone involved from Rowan University made it a successful workshop. Without a doubt, Dr. Richard Fopeano, the keynote speaker, was an excellent choice by Rowan University. He was not only informative about how teachers "pass-on" information to students, but his energetic manner was invigorating. Even though some of his ideas were taught during basic teacher education courses, he successfully stressed that teachers should "check their own plates" before cluttering their students' plates. Many educators are so concerned with pounding information into students that they forget how their views and feelings influence the way they teach and manage students. Dr. Fopeano's creative techniques stressed to the conference participants that they should think about themselves and how they learn in order to truly get the best from their students. His ideas are timely reminders that in the long run will help students learn better and teachers who follow this simple plan will in essence manage their classrooms better.
