The Humanities Division
2002-2003 Liberal Arts Core Guidebook The Humanities Division encompasses the history, theory, analysis and criticism of language, literature and other texts, religion, art, and music; and the examination of fundamental questions arising in the human search for values, knowledge, purpose, and meaning. These are central concerns of the departments or programs of African American Studies; English; Languages, Literatures and Linguistics; Fine Arts; Philosophy; Religion and Women's Studies. Online Literary Criticism Guide
Good literary criticism can be one of the hardest kinds of information to find on the Internet. Although there are many sources of online author information, it can often be difficult to find authoritative and critical works. To help you find the best information, we've collected and described some of the best starting places for finding online critical writing. This resource is particularly good for finding information on English-language authors, but also includes many authors whose works have been translated into English. If you find good guides to critical sites that we have missed, please let us know by emailing us at crit-url@ipl.org

    Program in Classical Studies
Classical Studies is concerned with the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome roughly from the time of Homer to the time of St. Augustine in all of their respects. This program thus offers undergraduates an opportunity to study the cultures of Greece and Rome through the combined resources of the departments of History, Literature, Visual Arts, and Philosophy. The study of ancient Greek and Latin languages themselves serves as the starting point for the broader consideration of specific texts in their literary, intellectual, and historical context. In cooperation with the Judaic Studies Program, moreover, students are provided the opportunity to link the study of ancient Greece to that of the ancient Near East. Major Minor Honors Course Offerings ... 2002-03 Courses
    The Major Programs
The Classical Studies programs offers four different degree paths, three within Classical Studies and one in cooperation with Judaic Studies. The majors are Greek, Latin, classics, and Greek and Hebrew. Each consists of a choice of twelve upper-division courses approved for the program and listed below. All courses used to meet requirements for a major in Classical Studies must be taken for a letter grade and be passed with a grade of C- or better.
    • GREEK
LT/WL 19A-B-C are a prerequisite to the Greek major. Six of the twelve upper-division courses must be Lit/Greek courses numbered 100 and above, but exclusive of Lit/Greek 101. The remaining six courses may be in classical civilization (in English translation), selected from the list of approved courses from History, Lit/European and Eurasian, Philosophy, Political Science, Theatre, and Visual Arts, though additional Lit/Greek courses numbered 100 and above (including Lit/Greek 101) are acceptable here. These must be from at least two departments and selected in consultation with the adviser; courses dealing with Greek civilization are strongly preferred.

    Comparative Literature
A student who elects comparative literature as a major must complete 48 semester hours in the courses indicated below, including at least 12 hours in courses numbered 300 or above. Besides knowing English, the student must have sufficient linguistic skill in at least one foreign language to participate in 200- and 300- level literature courses offered by the various foreign language and literature departments. As soon as a student contemplates choosing comparative literature as a major, the faculty adviser should be consulted. The adviser will assist the student in selecting appropriate courses that will be especially helpful as preparation for the advanced comparative literature training beginning with the junior year. Courses in classical civilization and in literature (particularly courses dealing with works from several countries) are especially recommended at relatively early stages of study. An ample selection of such courses at the 100- and 200-levels exists in the various literature departments. The distribution of course work allows for considerable flexibility. The major is administered by the Program in Comparative Literature.
