Cinco de Mayo Games and Activities
Remember, most games can be adapted to all ages of children with a bit of creative thinking. Also, if you choose to play a game that requires teams, and you have an odd number of children, one person will need to go twice. Ask for a volunteer and if one doesn't surface you might want to leave it up to the team to choose who they think will be the fastest.
Benito Juarez Says
How To Play: Before playing explain to the children that Benito Juárez, a Zapotec Indian, was born and raised in extreme poverty. With hard work, determination, and strong love for his country, Juárez became the president of Mexico and defeated the French, who had occupied the country for five years. Played similar to Simon Says. The player up is "Benito Juarez". Player will say "Benito Juarez says hop on one foot". The children will hop on one foot. Player will say "Stop". The children are to keep hopping on one foot until player says "Benito Juarez says stop". Repeat for additional activities such as take one baby step forward, step backwards, turn around, sit down. Sometimes Benito Juarez will say "Benito Juarez says" and sometimes he won't. It's a fun game to play with young children.

lyrics from Cileto Lindo Fascinating Facts:
Cinco de Mayo [the fifth of May] is one of 2 days which commemorate the independence of Mexico. Although Mexico's official independence day is el Dieciseis de Septiembre [September 16th], Cinco de Mayo is also considered a day of great importance. Having gained its independence from Spain by 1821, Mexico continued to be a hotbed of unrest. Rich in natural resources and gold, this land was coveted by the U.S. in its push to span the North American continent, as well as by European powers who viewed Mexico as a political foothold in the western hemisphere. Its territorial disputes with the U.S. having been settled by 1849, Mexico's attention was then focused on Europe. In addition to its importance in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is significant to

COLUMN OF THE AMERICAS by Patrisia Gonzales and Roberto Rodriguez
CINCO DE MAYO IS INDEPENDENCE DAY
AyAyAyAy!!!!!! The "gritos" heard round the world on Cinco de Mayo are primal screams commemorating a struggle against imperialism. May 5th celebrates an 1865 battle at Puebla, Mexico, pitting primarily Mexican indigenous forces against a powerful, imperialist, tax-collecting French army. September 15-16, on the other hand, are the days that Mexicans and Central Americans celebrate independence from 300 years of Spanish tyrannical rule. Cinco de Mayo is not an official U.S. holiday, nor should it be, though it is said that it has become in effect more a Mexican American celebration than a Mexican one one that reflects the reality of living marginally in the United States. At the same time, Cinco de Mayo is in danger of becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of the beer industry, an unofficial holiday with a white sale and a happy hour. Instead, Cinco should be proclaimed a day of cultural and spiritual independence for people of Mexican descent and Central Americans, too living in the United States. Because of demographic trends, Cinco as a community ritual will increase in importance. Here, because that historical battle is distant, perhaps Cinco will evolve into a day where many kinds of victories large and small are commemorated as well as the ongoing movements for dignity and equality. This is already the case in many communities where these celebrations manifest in different forms from ceremonies, essay contests and awards to political forums, educational conferences, parades and cruising.

Cinco de Mayo, May 5th, is a national holiday for Mexicosecond only to September 16, Independence Day. It was on this day, in 1862, that a small group of poorly trained Mexican peasants, under the command of General Ignacio Zaragoza, bravely and fiercely fought for their freedom against a regiment of 6,000 French soldiers under the command of Napoleon III.
Historical Background
"After Mexico gained it's independence from Spain in 1821, it faced internal power struggles that left it in a volatile state of rebellion and instability for years." (Internet: Pasmanick, 1992) In 1846, the Mexican government, under the dictator Santa Anna, went to war with the United States. As an outcome of that war, Mexico lost a large amount of landthe land we now know as Texas. In 1854, Juan Alvarez and his troops led a successful revolt to drive Santa Anna out of power. One of Alvarez's strongest supporters was a man by the name of Benito Juarez, a Zapotec Indian leader. In 1855, Juarez became the minister of Justice under the new regime and issued two new controversial laws. One denied the right of the church and military courts to try civilian cases and the other made the sale and distribution of church lands legal. Many people disagreed with these laws and for three years a civil war raged between the two sides.

Cinco de Mayo: a Mexican-American Holiday
By Jennifer S., BeBeyond.com USA I am writing this column on May 5th, or "Cinco de Mayo" (the 5th of May, in Spanish), a holiday with an interesting history. By the time you read it, the day will be past, but at least you'll know a little more about it in case you come across Cinco de Mayo again in the future. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the defeat of the French army by the Mexican army at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862. The 1850s and 60s were a very chaotic time for the country of Mexicothe nation had gained its independence from Spain in 1810, but was then engaged in external and internal war for the next several decades, leaving its economy in ruins. Mexico was unable to pay the foreign debts that it owed, so Napoleon III, emperor of France at the time, sent troops to Mexico to set up a government there. Initially, Napoleon III sent about 6,500 soldiers: they encountered strong resistance from the Mexicans of the Puebla region of Mexico, and were decisively

Group has sober take on Cinco de Mayo
All-you-can-drink image of holiday is under fire

By Deborah Ensor
Angered at the perception that booze and Cinco de Mayo go hand in hand, a group of Latino activists wants to restore the respect and true meaning of the Mexican holiday. "We are tired of the alcohol industry turning our holidays into all-you-can-drink events," said Jovita Hurtado, chairwoman of the newly formed San Diego Cinco de Mayo con Orgullo (with pride) Coalition. "Our culture is not for sale. Our people are not for sale."
Hurtado and dozens of social service workers, business people and community residents met at Chicano Park in Barrio Logan yesterday to launch a campaign to celebrate the holiday without alcohol or cigarettes. "For a lot of my friends, it's all about beer and parties," said 15-year-old Aliana Lopez. "But for me, it's more of a family thing, a cultural thing. I want to teach my friends about the real meaning of Cinco de Mayo." Aliana is the first Cinco de Mayo queen for the San Diego group, which was formed in August. The coalition is joining dozens of other similar organizations across the state to protest the alcohol and tobacco industries' influence on the holiday.
Liquor and beer companies often sponsor or advertise Cinco de Mayo events, said Jose Alvarez of Communities Against Substance Abuse, and they often heavily market their products during the holiday. Sponsors of last year's Cinco de Mayo celebration in Old Town included Jose Cuervo, Cointreau and Tequiza. The movement to celebrate the holiday sober started in 1997, and organizations work with communities to hold alcohol-free and tobacco-free events and to teach young people about the connection between marketing and consumption.

Elsewhere on the Web La Batalla de Cinco de Mayo (Spanish) Cinco de Mayo (Spanish) Cinco de Mayo 2002 (bilingual site) Many people believe that May 5 is the anniversary of the Mexican independence. But they're mistaken, for the Mexican Independence Day is September 16. As it was marching toward Mexico City, the French Army encountered stiff resistance. On May 5, 1862, General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated the French Army in the Battle of Puebla. The Mexican victory was a surprise, for the French Army was and larger and better equipped. There is a saying that it's possible to win the battle and lose the war. The French won other battles, and Maximillian became the ruler in 1864. But facing Mexican resistance and American pressure, the French withdrew its troops in 1867.
