Traditional Chinese Culture in Taiwan :
Architecture
The Art of Chinese Architecture
People who come to the Republic of China for the first time and see examples of traditional Chinese buildings with their curved roofs, bold colors, and intricate outlines may wonder how the Chinese ever came up with this unique architectural style. The basic feature of Chinese architecture is rectangularly-shaped units of space joined together into a whole. Temples in ancient Greece also employed rectangular spaces, but the overall effect tended to austerity. The Chinese style, by contrast, combines rectangular shapes varying in size and position according to importance into an organic whole, with each level and component clearly distinguished. As a result, traditional Chinese style buildings have an imposing yet dynamic and intriguing exterior. The combination of units of space in traditional Chinese architecture abides by the principles of balance and symmetry. The main structure is the axis, and the secondary structures are positioned as two wings on either side to form the main room and yard. Residences, official buildings, temples, and palaces all follow these same basic principles. The distribution of interior space reflects Chinese social and ethical values. In traditional residential buildings, for example, members of a family are assigned living quarters based on the family hierarchy. The master of the house occupies the main room, the elder members of the master's family live in the compound in back, and the younger members of the family live in the wings to the left and right; those with seniority on the left, and the others on the right.

Food in chinese culture. Finally, perhaps the most important aspect of the Chinesefood culture is the importance of food itself in chinese culture.

    Food in Chinese Culture
Adapted from K.C. Chang, Food in Chinese Culture: Anthropological and Historical Perspectives , New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1977. Reprinted with permission from Yale University Press. An anthropological approach to the study of food would be to isolate and identify the food variables, arrange these variables systematically, and explain why some of these variables go together or do not go together. For convenience, we may use culture as a divider in relating food variables' hierarchically. I am using the word culture here in a classificatory sense implying the pattern or style of behavior of a group of people who share it. Food habits may be used as an important, or even determining, criterion in this connection. People who have the same culture share the same food habits, that is, they share the same assemblage of food variables. Peoples of different cultures share different assemblages of food variables. We might say that different cultures have different food choices. (The word choices is used here not necessarily in an active sense, granting the possibility that some choices could be imposed rather than selected.) Why these choices? What determines them? These are among the first questions in any study of food habits.

    The Institute of Chinese Culture
    What's new?
Welcome to the homepage of the Institute of Chinese Culture (ICC). The ICC, founded in Houston in 1970, became the first non-profit, formally chartered Chinese language school and cultural organization in Texas. It was established to promote and preserve the Chinese culture and heritage within a multicultural community. The ICC had its beginnings at the campus of Rice University and then relocated to the Clarewood location in 1988. A fire in 1995 destroyed the building which housed the ICC. The education operations continued from facilities generously provided by Southwest College of the Houston Community College System. The ICC recently purchased a building at 10550 Westoffice Drive as a permanent location for the school. The new building is the culmination of the effort and contribution, a shining moment in the history of the ICC and a reflection of generous community spirit. A Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for the new building was held on Saturday, August 16, 1997. The Board of Directors as well as all the parents and students of the ICC cordially give sincere thanks to the entire Houston community to participate in this joyous occasion. The ICC also extends many thanks to Rice University and the Houston Community College System for their enormous support in the past, and to all the friends of the ICC near and far who made this dream become a reality. The ICC provides the following Saturday classes. Please contact Mrs. Jeanne Ma (281-980-5172) for further information:
