THE GOOD LANGUAGE LEARNER REPORT: SECTION TWO - METHODOLOGY AND APPROACH Return The first stage of this research Using these definitions I observed my classes during the normal teaching timetable in order to identify the two types of learners. I teach two distinct types of student, trainee secretaries and trainee engineers. All of the classes are studying at post form five level for a two year Diploma. Since the institution's intake is made up from form five graduates who make up the lower end of academic achievement (entry requirements stipulate a grade E in the Hong Kong School Certificate for English (HKCE), it can be argued that to some extent , all of the students I teach are not particularly successful language learners, certainly in terms of examination results. However , the chosen students differ in the way that they seem to apply themselves to language learning during class time. The identified 'good' language learner, Anna, is a secretarial student who achieved grade D in the HKCE for English. I chose her as a subject for the research as she is extremely active both in and out of the classroom in her language learning. During class she frequently interacts with me, inhibited by the use of her second language

Using Computers in Chinese Language Teaching Tianwei Xie California State University, Long Beach Introduction Although some uncertainty and skepticism exits, the use of computer in classroom instruction is gaining immense popularity today. Computers have become a necessity for a student. According to the Time magazine (March 2, 1998), "...in elementary schools, portable computers are the hottest thing since books. American schools are spending more than $5 billion this year on high tech." Some universities go as far as to require students to own a laptop or desktop computer upon beginning their studies (Bazar, 1999). Language teachers are also taking advantage of the modern high tech. Among others, English teachers have begun to use computers for their language instruction early and extensively. Boswood's New Ways of Using Computers in Language Teaching (Boswood, 1997, ed.) is a collection of papers written by English teachers describing various types of activities. These papers are extremely informative and helpful. Why do we need computers in teaching?

June 7, 1999 Oral Comp. Wrap-Up I must have been very adept at guessing the cause for my tiredness or something because my period started today. With it came stomach aches and lowered appetite. I feel like I have the flu. There's a sleepiness I feel that is just so sickly it's disgusting. Strangely enough, though, I seem to need less sleep to function. Then again, that might just be the added stress of finals week at school. Today was the tamest day in my three day span of finals. It opened with oral comp. where we had already finished all our tests anyway. All that remained was to hear out the rest of the people who hadn't presented their TIs yet. If anything they were horrible. Being the last day possible to give the speeches, the people left to sign up for them were obviously the slackers who would give up even extra credit to get a few extra days to procrastinate. (Not that I'm any better, I still ended up preparing the whole thing the morning before it was due.) Each TI had the mandatory three selections and a blanket theme but the links between them were horribly contrived. Some of the selections themselves were beautiful, though. In a TI about angels one person had a piece about an angel whose wings were burned and fell to the earth to see how much had changed, for the worse. It's a shame she failed to interpret it properly, and the rest of the TI didn't do the piece justice. Since everyone's TI was so pathetically shortsix to seven minutes when it's supposed to be nine or tenwe ended up with half an hour at the end to talk. First, though, the teacher had us pass out tests we had taken throughout the semester. The first was one we had taken on The Andromeda Strain. It was an essay test with a lot of annoying questions like "compare the book with the movie" and "how might too much technology be dangerous". (The movie, by the way, is one of the oldest and
