Relativistic Effects in Quantum Chemistry Relativistic effects are known to be very important in the physics and chemistry of the heavy elements. In fact, they are already important in some properties of light elements, but when it comes to molecules and solids containing elements of high Z, the relativistic effects become a must for essentially any property. , 5843 (1990).] If spin-orbit coupling interactions are relevant, a simple, though ab initio, one-electron spin-orbit operator is used in spin-orbit-CI calculations in the so called Wood-Boring Ab Initio Model Potential method, WB-AIMP [L. Seijo, J. Chem. Phys. , 8078 (1995).] Data have been produced and monitored for all the elements of the Periodic Table; they are available here. A second relevant contribution is the spin-free state shifting

Sue Clark
Professor, Chemistry
s_clark@mail.wsu.edu Home page Professor Clark received her Ph.D. in inorganic and radiochemistry in 1989 from Florida State University under the direction of Dr. Gregory R. Choppin in the Department of Chemistry. From 1989 until 1992, Dr. Clark was a senior scientist at Westinghouse Savannah River Company, before joining the University of Georgia's Savannah River Ecology Laboratory as an Assistant Research Scientist. In 1996, Dr. Clark joined the faculty at Washington State University. She also holds adjunct appointments at Clemson University in the Environmental Systems Engineering Department, Georgia Institute of Technology in the Health Physics program, and is an Associated Staff Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratories. Dr. Clark also serves in the American Chemical Society as the Editor of the Geochemistry Division Newsletter, and as Alternate Councilor in the Nuclear Chemistry and Technology Division. The research focus in our laboratory is on the environmental chemistry of the f-elements, the lanthanides and actinides. We are interested in their speciation in natural systems, and the processes that control their cycling in the environment. We use radiochemical and spectroscopic methods to determine speciation at equilibrium as well as changes in speciation as a function of time. By studying both the thermodynamics and kinetics of various systems, we can elucidate important environmental mechanisms - an essential tool for predicting the impact of environmental change on metal speciation. This work is providing new insights into the natural geochemical processes that control the fate and transport of these elements.

Introduction to the Double-Shell PSE Prolog The Aufbau (Build-up) principle of the conventional periodic system of the elements is based on the consecutive filling of the states of the hydrogen atom. However, as widely discussed in the literature, there are many exceptions to that rule. One might raise the question, if it is not possible to find a simplified system, which conserves the chemical families of the conventional periodic system, but is characterized by a less complicated formulation of the Aufbau principle.
Here a periodic system is introduced, which is of a high symmetry and is decribed by a very simple Aufbau principle, which does not require exceptions. We call it the Double-Shell Periodic System (PSE).
