Research Interests:
Another long-standing interest relates to compounds incorporating both transition metals and the main group elements silicon, germanium or tin. Characterisation by spectroscopic methods and by single-crystal X-ray crystallography provides insights into the nature of metal-metal bonding.
The wider application of X-ray crystallography to molecular structure determination is a recurring theme in many of the studies, with some work currently being directed at solving problems in organo-mercury chemistry. The coordination chemistry of thiosalicylate ligands is also being explored.
Other topics that are currently under investigation include the development of catalysts for oxidation of CO under ambient conditions, and the investigation of oxygen-absorbing polymeric films.

Sykora Funding: ACS-PRF Overview There are countless new compounds with spectular structures and wonderful properties left to discover. The underlying goal of all of our projects is to prepare such compounds. To date, we have focused on the preparation of new, early transition metal, lanthanide, and actinide containing compounds, as well as new arsenides and antimonides. In order to accomplish this, we rely upon non-traditional synthetic techniques, such as the use of supercritical fluids and reactive-fluxes. We have not only discovered unprecendented structures, but also unusual and potentially useful physical properties including new magnetic and luminescent materials. We have also recently prepared a series of compounds that are promising ion-exchange materials.

The History of Indian Chemistry
Human endeavour to analyse the composition of the universe and various objects is as old as civilisation. This led to the study of compositional changes effected by forces external and internal to it, and new compounds were formed by mixing two different substances. The application of this knowledge vary from pottery to medical sciences. Evidences could be found in literary works of the period and in various scientific treatises on alchemy, metallurgy, fireworks, paper works etc. This paper attempts to chart out in chronological order such evidences beginning from the Indus valley/Harappan civilization. Various works in Sanskrit dealing with other areas of learning also point to the fact that knowledge about chemistry prevailed in ancient India. Among the 64 arts and sciences enumerated in Kamasutra of Vatsyayana  there is mention of suvarna ratna pariksa (the examination of gold and gems),

Since Mendeleyev devised the periodic table, other elements have been discovered by scientists. Many of the elements have been put to practical uses or affected society in important ways since their discoveries. For this lesson, you will need: Periodic table of the elements Research materials on the elements and on important scientists Computer with Internet access Review with students what they have learned about the periodic table of the elements. Ask such questions as Who devised the periodic table? How did Mendeleyev know that there were gaps in the table? How was he able to predict the properties of the ‘missing,’ yet-to-be-discovered elements? Assign each member of your class one of the elements in the periodic table, asking each student to research the element he or she has been assigned in order to answer the following questions: What was the date of the element’s discovery? Which scientist or scientists discovered the element? Where was the element discovered? Under what circumstances was it discovered?
