Mount Union College Academics Academic Departments Chemistry The Department of Chemistry seeks to contribute to the achievement of the general objectives of the College by providing a well-balanced program of studies. Courses are offered to satisfy the needs of students with a casual interest in chemistry, those requiring a supporting program to their major, or those desiring a major which provides a strong background of knowledge in the field of chemistry. Majors are prepared for advanced study in graduate or professional school or for careers in chemistry. Instruction in the department places emphasis on the use of modern scientific instruments, a library of books and journals in chemistry, and the ability of the student to do independent work. • Will the Universe expand forever? Is there life on other planets? How are stars formed? These are some of the questions being addressed by students majoring in Astronomy. Some areas of study in astronomy include the sun, the solar system, the stars, the Milky Way, galaxies, and cosmology. SDSU is the only institution in the California State University System that offers a complete academic program in astronomy. Students participate in all phases of observational astronomical research. Much of this work is done at the Mount Laguna Observatory, operated by the University.
Department of Biology
  • The Department of Biology offers a dynamic an modern program in biology which prepares students both academically and practically for vocations in science and science-related fields, or for entry into graduate studies. The major is designed to present a basic background in modern biology and in the supportive disciplines of chemistry, mathematics, and physics, and to provide specialized training selected by the student from a variety of areas.

Members of the department teach a wide variety of introductory and advanced courses. The department offers both a major and a minor in chemistry; majors may choose their curriculum to receive ACS certification. In addition there are numerous opportunities for students to work with faculty on independent research projects. Faculty research interests cover several areas of chemistry, including inorganic, physical, organic, biochemistry, and computational chemistry. We are well equipped with modern instrumentation to support both research and teaching laboratories. For an in-depth look at the department, follow the links in the menu and then come visit us in Sabin-Reed.
