Molecular and Cellular Biology
One of the most exciting areas of biology is the study of how the genetic information carried in all cells controls their characteristics, biochemical interactions and reproduction . A better understanding of the way information is coded in DNA and RNA molecules can be used in medicine and in industry to develop cures for genetic diseases and to design novel biotechnological processes. If you choose this degree program you will gain experience of important techniques such as cell culture, recombinant DNA technology and the visualisation of protein structure using molecular graphics. The degree programmes are constructed from modules which are split into those that are core to the degree pathway or optional. You can either opt to specialise in the first two years and select the options of your interest or leave to the final year to select your specialization. TOO MUCH OXYGEN ON THE CELL BIOLOGY BENCH? NEW STUDY SUGGESTS SO
COLUMBUS, Ohio Research conducted at Ohio State University suggests that cell biologists may be exposing the cell cultures they study to too much oxygen. This finding could have broad implications for cellular biology research, which receives billions of dollars of funding nationally, said Ohio State scientist Chandan Sen . He is the lead author of a study which suggests that cells act differently depending on how much oxygen they are exposed to, especially when it is too much.

Faculty research interests include: the extracellular matrix; protein processing and turnover; mechanisms of signal transduction; cell manipulation and regeneration; cell specific gene expression; organelle biogenesis and gene expression; chromosome dynamics and structure; and cell outgrowth and migration.

About Cell Biology
The faculty research programs incorporate state-of-the-art experimental approaches which combine molecular, cellular and biochemical techniques. These include: cloning, characterization and functional analysis of genes by site-directed mutagenesis and antisense strategies; expression and ablation of genes in cultured cells and transgenic animals; isolation and characterization of transcription factors; gene mapping; chromatin structure analysis; fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis for subcellular localization of genes and targeting of transcripts; and scanning, transmission, cryoelectron microscopy coupled with high-resolution three-dimensional image analysis. The University of Massachusetts Worcester Campus recently merged with the Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research. Cell and molecular biologists, biochemists, developmental biologists, and neurobiologists from the Foundation have joined us as full-time faculty, adding a further dimension to the expertise available to the department.
An active, expanding research program in molecularly oriented cell biology with highly multidisciplinary approaches strongly supports graduate student participation.

Cells fall into prokaryotic and eukaryotic types. Prokaryotic cells are smaller (as a general rule) and lack much of the internal compartmentalization and complexity of eukaryotic cells. No matter which type of cell we are considering, all cells have certain features in common: cell membrane, DNA, cytoplasm, and ribosomes.

The shapes of cells are quite varied with some, such as neurons , being longer than they are wide and others, such as parenchyma (a common type of plant cell) and erythrocytes (red blood cells) being equidimensional. Some cells are encased in a rigid wall, which constrains their shape, while others have a flexible cell membrane (and no rigid cell wall). The size of cells is also related to their functions. Eggs (or to use the latin word, ova ) are very large, often being the largest cells an organism produces. The large size of many eggs is related to the process of development that occurs after the egg is fertilized, when the contents of the egg (now termed a zygote ) are used in a rapid series of cellular divisions, each requiring tremendous amounts of energy that is available in the zygote cells. Later in life the energy must be acquired, but at first a sort of inheritance/trust fund of energy is used.

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) provides students with a sophisticated and rigorous program in a multidisciplinary environment, enabling students to become independent, creative, and productive researchers.
After admission to the PhD Program in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, students are assigned to one of two training programs based on their particular research interests and academic background: Genetics and Genomics or Molecular, Cellular, and Chemical Biology Program. These two programs combine the resources of three departments, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, and Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Students in both programs spend their first year taking courses and doing research rotations. Near the end of the first year, students select a faculty thesis advisor and begin independent research.
