    The Dynamic Cell A New Concept for Teaching Molecular Cell Biology Beschreibung:
    The Dynamic Cell is a new concept in the teaching of cell biology, depicting the cell in a series of animated 3-dimensional scenes. By clicking with the mouse on structures within the scenes, 'illustrated records' (pop-up screens) appear with animations, simulations, zoomed views, video clips or still pictures, accompanied by a short, descriptive text. Students are thus taken on a visual tour of the cell and introduced to cellular structures and processes in an interactive and entertaining way. Using the Biological Literature
Web Resources Molecular and Cellular Biology Molecular biology is defined as "The study of the structure and function of large molecules associated with living organisms, in particular proteins and the nucleic acids DNA and RNA" (Oxford Dictionary of Biology, 4th ed., 2000), while cellular biology is the study of cells, "the structural and functional unit of most living organisms" (Oxford Dictionary of Biology, 4th ed., 2000). Molecular biology is among the most rapidly growing fields within biology with recent success stories such as the sequencing of the entire human genome (reported in Science and Nature). Molecular biology is unusual in that the major information source for molecular biologists is not journal articles, but public databases such as GenBank, PDB, and DDBJ (annotated below in the database section). This is one reason why there are relatively fewer handbooks and treatises for molecular biology than there are for other biological subjects. There is a natural affinity between this chapter and the ones discussing reference materials for Biochemistry and Genetics . Given this very substantial overlap, it is essential to review the sources annotated in these sections for a more complete understanding of the literature of molecular biology.

Evolution of the Homo lineage of modern humans ( Homo sapiens ) began with the hunter of nearly five feet tall, Homo habilis , who is widely presumed to have evoloved from an australopithecine ancestor. Near the beginning of the Pleistocene (2 million years ago), Homo habilis was transformed into Homo erectus (Java Man), who used fire and possessed culture. Middle Pleistocene populations of Homo erectus are said to show steady evolution toward the anatomy of Homo sapiens (Neanderthals, Cromagnons, and modern humans), 120,000 to 40,000 years ago. The Faculty of Bio Sciences at the University of Heidelberg offers International Graduate and Postgraduate Programmes in Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) leading to a Master of Science (M.Sc) degree and a Dr. rer.nat. (Ph.D.) degree, respectively. The MCB Master Programme comprises three semesters: a two semester (one year) teaching programme and one semester for the Master thesis work. Successful students may then enter a doctoral programme, which usually lasts three years.
Fields of study and research are Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology.
Courses are taught in English by a team of internationally renowned scientists from the Faculty of Bio Sciences, the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences and the Earth Sciences, and the Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg, the Centre for Molecular Biology (ZMBH) and from the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Medical Research and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). The growth of new blood vessels - is an important natural process occurring in the body, both in health and in disease. The healthy body controls angiogenesis through a series of "on" and "off" switches: When angiogenic growth factors are produced in excess of angiogenesis inhibitors, the balance is tipped in favor of blood vessel growth. This resource is available principally to students and faculty at Arizona State University. Industrial users can approach the “Mammal Cell Culture Resource” described above. This laboratory was made possible by grants from the Howard Hughes Foundation (in support of undergraduate research) and the Whitaker Foundation (Program Development Award). The laboratory’s principal function is to create an environment to jointly train advanced undergraduate students and beginning graduate students from both the Life Science and Bioengineering Departments in a formal course setting where the students can learn the paradigms, vocabulary, and limitations of each discipline, as well as promoting team work. Students gain experience in mammalian cell culture, the growth of mouse embryonic stem cells, the use of microgravity bioreactors and microcapillary bioreactors, and a variety of other techniques in cell biology.

Basic Cell Biology for Parents of a Child with Down Syndrome

This article is written for parents who have recently learned that their baby has Down syndrome. After I learned that my baby Carmen had Down syndrome, and after the shock wore off, I immediately set to work learning as much as I could about this condition. In the process, I learned about Targeted Nutritional Intervention, or TNI. I ordered a huge stack of literature about TNI. All of a sudden, I was faced with a great deal of Latin! It is important that parents understand what is happening inside their child’s body. Therefore, it helps to have some basic background in cell biology, and a little bit of biochemistry, before tackling all the Latin. So, why is all this important? Well, the simple answer is that an extra copy of chromosome 21 lives in each cell of your child’s body. Much of the biochemical damage done by that extra chromosome happens in the cells. So, I am going to discuss the various parts of the cell, paying special attention to the portions that seem to be most affected by the extra chromosome. I will also discuss general cell function, again focusing on the functions that are affected by Down syndrome. Finally, I will discuss the specific functions that are affected in nerve cells. I have tried to only give as much detail as I think is necessary to understand the basic issues of Down syndrome, and have aimed to describe things at a level detailed enough to be accurate and descriptive, but simple enough to be understood. For this reason, some things may be somewhat simplified, and much detail has been omitted. Also, I have included a glossary of words (all the long ones and the initials!) at the end of this essay.

The Department of Anatomy and Cellular Biology offers a wide range of both professional (medical, dental, veterinary) and graduate (Ph.D.) level courses in such areas as gross anatomy, embryology, neurosciences, histology, and cell biology and developmental biology.
During the first year of the medical curriculum, students receive instruction in human gross anatomy, embryology, histology, and cell biology. In gross anatomy, regional dissection of the human body is correlated with lectures and small-group sessions involving diagnostic, surgical and radiological applications material. Computerized, WEB-based teaching modules are used to facilitate the study of sectional anatomy as it relates to diagnostic MRI and CT images. Lectures in human embryology and congenital anomalies are correl with the gross anatomy topics. In the histology course, the microscopic structure of cells, tissues, and organs is presented, with emphasis on the correlation of structure and function. Current topics in cell biology are included as a basis for understanding cell function.
