My First Trip To Europe
My friend Ed and I went to Germany, Luxemburg, and Austria during the second half of February 1997. (Most of our time was spent in Germany.) It was an excellent trip. We had a lot of fun, and have returned with a few stories. While in Germany, we stayed with our friend Tony Scott and his family. Tony is a Senior Airman in the US Air Force, and is stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base. Tony took two weeks of leave and shuttled us around, showing us the sights. My friend Ed has also written up stories about the trip. His stories can be found on his web site Since I'm not writing up everything I did over the entire two week trip, I'm also not going to bother making this chronological. If you would like to read a chronological description of what we did after Ed got there, check out his stories
Here are my stories:
Our dining experiences were some of the most enjoyable times we had in Germany. We decided early in the trip to spend a while each day searching out The Place . We defined The Place as the most authentic, most German restaurant possible. (Ed has a great definition of

Many informed experts call Schwerin Castle – with its golden cupolas visible for miles around – the “Neuschwanstein of the North.” The venerable structure situated picturesquely on the banks of Lake Schwerin is one of the most important examples of historical architecture in Germany. After the country’s reunification, the famous trademark of Schwerin, a city rich in tradition, became the State Capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Today, politicians are not the only people working in the former royal residence; a team of experts has been carefully restoring the Schwerin Castle since 1992. The State building authorities in Schwerin commissioned the architects of BHL (Bassewitz, Hupertz, Limbrock GmbH) in Hamburg and the civil engineers of the Karlsruhe office for construction (Wenzel, Frese, Pförtner, Haller) for the work. Their first project was to restore the facades of the castle, and several rooms also had to be renovated for members of the State parliament.

Budingen Castle
Budingen, Hesse
Budingen Castle The Emigration to Russia for many Germans started off with Budingen Castle as a gathering point. The count of Isenburg, in power in Budingen in the 1760s, was apparently very sympathetic to the recruiting agents of Catherine the Great of Russia. The recruiting agents were not looked upon favorably by many other local princes and rulers. This also helps to explain the large number of German immigrants from the Isenburg region. The first appearance of the Lords of Budingen was in 1131, with a water castle under construction by 1200. Ludwig von Ysenburg, of the ancient aristocracy of the Rhine, appears in 1258 amongst the heirs of the Lords of Budingen. The castle and court came into sole ownership of the Ysenburgs (Isenburgs) in 1323 and has remained in the family line for more than 700 years. The political developments of the 18th century prevented Budingen Castle from being rebuilt in the baroque style that was so popular at the time. This helped to retain the castle architecture in a stage much earlier than many other restored castles. Many German couples were also married in Budingen Castle before departing for Russia. A transcribed list in German of these

http://www.cruisewaterways.com/ports/Germany.html
Germany Bad Schandau , Germany
The old spa town and resort in "Saxon Switzerland" lies near the border with Czechia, amidst the unique scenery of the "Elbsandsteingebirge". Bad Wimpfen , Germany
Romantic medieval spa with many sights and a wonderful old town with half-timbered houses. Bernkastel-Kues , Germany
One of the prettiest towns in Germany, with gabled, half-timbered houses surrounding the marketplace and other cobbled squares, a late Renaissance guildhall, beautiful fountains and magnificent wine taverns, all preserved practically intact from medieval and Renaissance times. Boppard , Germany
A lovely riverside promenade (the Rheinallee) makes a pleasant walk in this town, which lies in the largest loop of the Rhine. Parts of its medieval enclosing walls, gates, and towers still stand. Braubach , Germany
Handsome half-timbered houses and inns recall prosperous medieval days. Marksburg Castle, the massive fortress that dominates the village, is the only such castle on the Rhine untouched by warfare, a museum of military life from the 13th Century on. Cochem , Germany
Its setting is probably the most famous in the Moselle Valley, vineyards rising in terraces to a splendid hilltop castle, the Reichsburg Cochern built in 1029. A baroque town hall stands amid winding streets, cobblestone courtyards and towers.
