H@R! : Heritage at Risk
GERMANY
The protection and conservation of monuments in the 16 German (States) are laid down in separate laws. Each State has its own State Conservation Office which looks after historic buildings and archaeological sites. Generally speaking, the conservation of cultural heritage is a political matter which is taken very seriously. After decades of neglect in the old parts of the East German towns the German reunification confronted the new States with the task of having to keep up and repair an enormous number of historic monuments. In the meantime not only many public buildings but also a considerable amount of private historic houses, ranging from medieval half-timbered houses to 19 th century districts, have been saved from dilapidation - the latter group profiting from (a city building fund) as well as from tax exemptions for owners of cultural heritage places. However, many buildings are still at risk and need to be restored. An example of the particular problems that East Germany is facing is Quedlinburg, a town founded in the early Middle Ages, which is now on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Before Reunification the majority of the large number of half-timbered houses were to be demolished and consequently were no longer maintained. In the meantime considerable effort has been made to restore these houses with funds from the city building fund, however a great number are still empty. This is often the case where the right of possession is in doubt. Therefore, it is necessary to continue the effort to protect the historic fabric of the buildings.

ALPENHOF MURNAU (****L): One hour drive from Munich, the lively and picturesque capital of Bavaria, the ALPENHOF MURNAU is located in the heart of Upper Bavaria, in a little bit of heaven, situated right on the border of the nature reserve called Murnauer Moos. The ski resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the legendary King Ludwig II's SchloB Neuschwanstein, and the 2,962 meters high Zugspitze marking the boarder with Austrian Tyrol are vicinity. The clear waters of the Staffelsee are only a few blocks away. Romantic, baroque, natural and warmly hospitable, the region is a Paradise for lovers on a honeymoon, sport freaks, and for anybody looking for freedom and beauty. The ALPENHOF MURNAU displays an alpine architecture matching fairly well the landscape. Affiliated to the since 1972, it welcomes guests from all over the world in a stylish country house. It doesn't look like an hotel: there is an intimate reception lounge, with beams and wood furniture which at first sight create a warm and peaceful atmosphere. No front desk manager; but a smiling lady in her traditional Bavarian dress, ready to assist the guests anytime, and anticipating any of their request. There is only 77 rooms , ranked in five categories: The STANDARD ROOMS are situated in the annex. They have a private shower. The COMFORT ROOMS, in the

The chapel tower of Schloss Rheda
As remarkable piece of architectural ingeniousness, the Romanesque chapel of Rheda Castle came about as a result of a fusion of its function as both a fortified tower and also as a religious chapel. It is a tribute to the political power of its builder, Hermann II zur Lippe.
The chapel-tower forms the striking symbol of Schloss Rheda, which remains until today the seat of the princely family zu Bentheim- Tecklenburg. The castle is an early example of the regional Munsterland style of water- fortresses, the origins of which date back to the 12th century. The only remnant of the medieval castle that remains today is the chapel-tower (1215/20 - 1275) and the library tower (13-15th century). The rest of the castle dates from the 17th and 18th centuries.
