From the August 2001 issue of World Press Review (VOL. 48, No. 8)
A House for Every Season
Andrea Freund, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (conservative), Frankfurt, Germany, May 17, 2001
On a plot of land on the edge of the historic town center with its robust brick buildings, within only two days, a light, airy house was screwed and welded together from just four sections. Besides boasting the benefits of modular and energy-saving homes, this one can turn to face the sun. At first, the construction site looked something like a playground. A kindergarten class even took advantage of the spring morning for an outing to watch in awe as the crane lifted the first half of the ground floor, heaved it over a hedge, and with a swing, slowly placed it onto the steel circle, half of which then disappeared. The motor that drives the revolving device is situated beneath the house, making it resemble a model rather than a modular home. While the builders were still busy working on the steel girders for the terrace, which of course will revolve with the house, someone started up the motor, and the building began to turn even before the roof was in place.

The Eifel
The Eifel is a fascinating region in West Germany that is located between the Rhein and Mosel rivers. The cities of Aachen, Trier, and Koblenz form a geographical triangle within which this beautiful landscape resides. Unlike many regions within Germany, the Eifel is not industrial and contains no large cities. It is, rather, an agricultural region within which one will find many popular sites and enjoy it's own special history. Typical for the Eifel are it's volcanic mountains, narrow valleys, and pristine lakes. One may also find numerous wooded areas that invite you to hike, camp, or just sit and enjoy their beauty.
Within one of these typical Eifel regions lies the monastery Maria Laach. A visit of this monastery will be our first stop on this day-trip. Characteristic of this monastery are the bright and dark volcanic stones that give it its unique look. But there are man other features inside Maria Laach that only need to be experienced. Schloß Bürresheim (Bürresheim Castle) - our next stop- offers an insight into traditional German castle architecture. Exquisite furnishings, paintings, and architecture style of the recent owners, the Bürresheim family, can be looked at today.
Monastery Maria Laach
Within one of these typical Eifel regions lies the monastery Maria Laach. The name derives from the lake upon which it is located. The lake is itself of interest as it was formed due to a volcanic eruption over 11,000 years ago. Later, during the 11th century, monks settled in this fertile area and, as was often the case during this period, a prince named Heinrich II of Luxemburg-Salm decided to build a monastery for the purpose of redeeming his sole and praising God. Heinrich the II died in 1095 before he could finish the monastery but his wife continued his work. In 1156 the Kloster Maria Laach was finally inaugurated by Heinrich II's son. Altogether, it took the monks 150 years to complete the monastery.

Cobblestone streets flanked with intricate Baroque architecture; market squares edged with outdoor cafes; and picturesque castle ruins overlooking everything. Heidelberg has it all. by Bob Neubauer I t was just before 11:00 a.m. when the faint sound of bells first drifted to my ears. Forgetting the picture I'd been about to snap, I hurried to the stone wall at the edge of the castle garden and gazed down at the town below. A half dozen church steeples towered above the sea of orange-brown rooftops, and from their belfries rose a symphony of bells. Each one added its own sound to the mixnot simply chiming the hour but clanging loudly and furiously, as if a fanatical altar boy was at the end of each rope.

Useful Information
The Building
"A new building for new art - in February 1997 the Galerie der Gegenwart (Gallery of Contemporary Art) was officially opened. The extension building, designed by Cologne architect Oswald Mathias Ungers forms part of the Hamburg Kunsthalle , which was built in 1869 and first extended in 1919. For O.M. Ungers the square is the perfect form, a concept which dates back to the Renaissance. His design for the new museum owes a debt of recognition above all to the work of Karl Friedrich Schinkel . Ungers has great respect for the existing facade of the Kunsthalle and for this reason conceived the new building in two parts: a four storey cube and a basement level linking the old building to the new. Taking the square as his basic shape, Ungers has created a clearly-defined, strong architecture with an interior designed specifically to meet the needs of art and its public. The bastion-like foundation serves to emphasize the insular location of the Kunsthalle.
The Concept
"The aim of the new Gallery ist to present the most important international developments in art since 1960. While it is not possible to illustrate these in their entirety, the new museum will nevertheless attempt to do justice to the major movements which have already taken their place in art history." This is why the most important aim of a residence for artists is to maintain its indefinite nature. It is only through its openness, tolerance, transparency and perpetual transformation that the model can become an "open space" in the long term, i.e. a place that is open to art and to artists. Such a place should not only be understood as being a place to produce art but also as a place to think and communicate. Here, the artist's nomadic spirit can find a temporary abode. Travelling, in this sense, can be a sort of self-examination process and a source of inspiration. A very special sensitivity is needed to be able to redefine this place again each day and to be able to react to both the exterior and interior conditions. Has one created a place to pass through does man -the "inner voyager" take something of the place with him? At any rate, something does come out, partly from the depths of time at one given moment. A stay in a residence for artists should always be understood as an investment in the future. The consequences of such a unique experience with a place are not immediately visible. They only come to light much later; they lie deeper than one might suppose.

Castles and Palaces
Although the terms castle and palace have been used interchangeably for centuries, there are in fact distinctions which separate the two types of structures. A castle is a fortified building whose primary purpose is to provide security or defend a territory from one's enemies. A palace, in contrast, is a building whose primary function is that of a luxurious and often eccentric abode. Palaces predate castles by several centuries, with their first appearance being in the Egyptian and Middle Eastern civilizations of ancient history. Although castles are no longer recognized as a means of security from foes, palaces will continue to be built as long as there are people who can afford them. The links included herein relate to castles and palaces.

GERMANY
Germany, or as the Germans call their country, Deutschland , is a fascinating and majestic nation...
rich in history, culture, and unparalleled architecture.
To experience this claim, one only needs to travel to the Royal Castle
of King Ludwig II, situated in the mountains of Southern Bavaria...
on the border with Austria.
Known as Schloss Neuschwanstein , the castle is relatively "new" in German architecture. Constructed from the 1860s to the 1880s, the King lived in the castle for only 172 days, before his mysterious death in 1886. During my three years in Germany, I made two trips to this castle... but there are countless others throughout the country, and magnificent cathedrals that posses the same grandeur. Germany is slightly smaller than the state of Montana, but has a population over over 80 million. Known for its "no speed limit" autobahns, Germany has an efficient public transportation system of trains and streetcars... and is equipped with a variety of industries and numerous high-tech firms.

    http://www.geocities.com/rr17bb/hitler.html
Architecture and design in Nazi Germany
The Nazi revolution in Germany needed architecture to bequeath a new image to history, and to offer contemporary society a strong rallying point. The Classical, monumental style replaced the modern style. In the 1930s, nationalism for the first time took solid form as nationalist art.
When Nazi had their social consolidation completed, they used architecture to celebrate their image. Nazi architecture consisted of two phases between 1936 and 1940, firstly, the great set pieces of party edifies and secondly, the plans for Berlin, Nuremberg and Munich, the key cities of the Third Reich. Nazism architecture existed largely within the minds of two central personalities, Hitler and Albert Speer.
In the beginning there was an overlap of the old and the new. Until 1930 the Party did not openly criticize the industrial and social building programs of architects like Walter Gropius or Mies van der Rohe.
The National Socialist's united view on architecture was the rejection of a modern style. The Quaint vernacular style for housing and a monumental style for public buildings became the order of the day. But The National Socialists did not wholly rejected modern technology. They often used the most advanced building techniques hidden behind neoclassical facades. Along with the rejection of modern architecture came a rejection of the corresponding furniture.
Modern Movement suffered instant eclipse after the National Socialist seizure of power in January 1933. The modernist tendency to reduce all form to abstraction made it an unsatisfactory manner in which to represent the power and ideology of the state. The need to treat the problems posed by representation or lack of it has increased rather than diminished over the years. In general sense, New Tradition may be taken as evidence of the failure of abstract form to communicate.
