Guadeloupe draws its culture from the mainly the French but also from African, East Indian and West Indian influence. This is displayed in the architecture of their buildings, which range from French colonial to Hindu temples. The food is a creation of the mixture of these cultures into a unique Creole cuisine. Guadeloupe is the center of the Caribbean's Creole culture and it boasts a blend of the above-mentioned influences. The official language spoken is French but creation patois is prevalent in the homes. Actually, festivals and cultural events, the traditional Creole dress, which is comprised of bright madras type plaid of oranges and yellow accompanied by a matching headdress usually dominate the scene. There is a great deal of artistic talent on the island that consists of a thriving music scene which includes beguine and zouk which are distinctively Afro-French-Caribbean; calypso and reggae which are distinctively Caribbean.

Martinique has traditionally been called “the Paris of the Antilles” and “a little piece of France in the Caribbean.” Evidence of this truth is everywhere and, although there are other French Caribbean islands, Martinique radiates more of the culture and charm of cosmopolitan Paris. Restaurants serve haute cuisine, stores display haute couture and people speak haute Français. However, in true West Indies fashion, you’re just as likely to be served spicy Créole at a beach-side café by an islander wearing madras and speaking thickly-accented patois. Polyrhythm and the Caribbean: Intersections of Culture, History, and Literature
General Introduction
David P. Lichtenstein '99 , Brown University, Contributing Editor, Caribbean Web
POLYRHYTHM, also called CROSS-RHYTHM: the simultaneous combination of contrasting rhythms in a musical composition. Britannica Online The steel drum, first created from oil drums in Trinidad's poorer urban areas as a means of cultural resistance to economic hardship and oppression, has quickly become the instrument most clearly identifiable with the Caribbean. Visitors to the region regularly encounter the steel drum (or pan as it is also called), from tourist welcomings in the airport, to performances at local fish fries, to the three day Trinidadian barrage of steel and soca music known as Carnival. But one never finds a solitary steel pan. Rather the instruments commonly exist as but one piece in a community of percussions that make up a steel pan band. In the days and weeks before Trinidad's Carnival, one can hear these bands warming up in the Panyards, perfecting the tunes and rhythms that will fire the streets of Port of Spain (the capital city) and shake the bones of all participants. But there is nothing new about this phenomenon. In fact one could say that the multiple rhythms which from the beginning have shaken the Caribbean gave birth to the steel drum, rather than the other way round. Most obviously one finds this sense of polyrhythm in geography. The fact remains that multiple islands, many geographically and geologically quite different from the others, all unite to form the West Indies region. But this rhythmic structure also lies far deeper than what one could find on a map. Historically, rhythms from around the world have clashed and combined to make up the modern day Caribbean. Digging through the layers of history, one first locates the shadowy presence of American Indians. Tribes such as the Caribs and the

Home About The Bahamas Islands Activities ... Culture A young Bahamain A trader in the straw market, Exuma A conch vendor Bahamian culture has embraced a panorama of native customs of the indigenous "Indian" people who populated The Islands Of The Bahamas over the eons. Then Bahamian culture suddenly underwent an abrupt change beginning in 1647 when English Puritans settled on the island of Eleuthera. It has further evolved over the past four centuries, witnessing the arrival of Bermudan slaves and free blacks, British Loyalists (accompanied by slaves) fleeing America after the War of Independence, freed Africans from slave ships, Black Seminoles from Florida, people from other Caribbean islands, as well as Chinese, Syrian and Greek immigrants. These people with their different backgrounds, traditions and beliefs shaped Bahamian culture into the unique, colorful patchwork of life and lifestyles that it is today.
The Islands Of The Bahamas gained independence from Great Britain on July 10, 1973, which is celebrated as Bahamian Independence Day. As a member of the British Commonwealth, The Islands Of The Bahamas has a symbolic link to Great Britain, with an appointed Governor-General representing the Queen of England. To see a prime example of British influence on Bahamian government, plan to see the Changing of the Guards ceremony. There is much pomp and ceremony and the Royal Bahamas Police Force Band also performs. The ceremony occurs at Government House (the office and residence of the Governor-General) in Nassau every two weeks.

HISTORY
Though all the islands did not develop in the same way, their history is similar; discovered by the English but colonized by the Spanish, they were military ruled for thirty-six years. For many years, Spain and England fought for control of the islands, and so the Spanish flag was lowered only to raise the British one time and time again. This tug or war ended in 1793 with the signing of the Versailles Treaty, in which England recognized Spain's sovereignty over the archipelago. Trade with England, however, was maintained. After 300 years of tumultuous history, the results were a proud race with mahogany skin, light-colored eyes, an English accented with the rhythm of the Caribbean, devout Protestants and believers in magic. History which embraces settlements of Dutch, French, African, English and Spanish who fought over, won, lost and occupied these lands on different occasions.
