General History of the Caribbean Volume VI: Methodology and Historiography of the Caribbean Summary Volume VI of the General History of the Caribbean looks at the ways historians have written the history of the region depending upon their methods of interpretation and differing styles of communicating their findings. The linguistic diversity of the region would require the ideal historian to be proficient in all its languages. However, since in general proficiency is limited to two or three languages at most, the inability of the historian to identify and interrogate relevant material scattered in a variety of depositories in the Caribbean, the US, Europe, Africa, India and China has affected the ways in which the history of the region has been written.

General History of the Caribbean Volume II New Societies: the Caribbean in the Long Sixteenth Century Summary The subject of Volume II of the General History of the Caribbean is the evolution of Caribbean societies between 1492 and 1650 through the intrusion of Europeans and Africans. When Columbus landed in the Bahamas on 12 October 1492, he ended the biological isolation of the American continent.
Thereafter, English, French, Dutch and African migrants, whether free, indentured or enslaved, crossed the ocean. With them came the political, economic, social and religious elements of the cultures of the Old World, which together would in time become Caribbean Creole culture.

W E L C O M E A visit to the Caribbean today offers far more than the world's best beaches. As the islands have grown into international travel destinations, their individual features and strengths have emerged. Many traditional cultures have been preserved, and the astonishing ecological treasures of the islands are now among their most celebrated features. The region's rich history is also gaining a more appreciative audience among vacationers. Today, the Caribbean offers a more diverse and vibrant travel experience than ever before.
The Caribbean Sea is the world's fifth largest body of water. With a total area of 970,000 square miles, it is slightly bigger than the Mediterranean. The region's islands are incredibly varied, ranging from lush and tropical to arid semi-desert. The climate is ideal, with year-round temperatures averaging around 80 degrees F.

Music is one of the most important ingredients of Carnival. There is no denying that Calypso and Pan Music are as Caribbean as baseball is American. Calypso Competitions/Revues and Pan-o-Rama have long been Carnival favorites; and to the complete satisfaction of music and carnival lovers the Carnival Committee plan musical venues for almost every night during the Carnival festivities. Calypso is a musical art form that has long been associated with the Caribbean. Calypso music is an important part of Caribbean culture and an essential element to Carnival. Talented calypsonians, from the USVI and other Caribbean islands, using wit and talent compete for titles, like Calypso Monarch. One calypsonian is chosen to bear the title for the year. The performers are judged on ability to sing, stage performance and on the lyrics of their calypso. Children also perform and compete for titles of best junior calypsonian. In Calypso the sound of the words is as important as the words themselves. Often lyrics are saturated with double meanings and stories. Calypsonians use their music to make good and bad commentaries on social and political events both locally and nationally, male-female relationships, everyday life and the Caribbean.

Visitors will soon discover that the Dominican Republic offers much more than the typical Caribbean attractions of sun, sand and sea.

    Heart of the Caribbean
Third Edition Brian Dyde Antigua is one of the Caribbean islands discovered by Columbus in 1493. It possesses numerous natural attractions, many interesting historical sites, a wide range of excellent hotels and, reputedly, a beach for every day of the year. This completely revised guide portrays Antigua and its little-known sister island (one of the very few Leeward Islands that Columbus did not discover) as the State of Antigua and Barbuda enters the second millennium. As with all the Caribbean islands, there is much more to Antigua than just sea, sun and steel-band music. This book, written by an author who has known the island since 1959 and who is married to an Antiguan, introduces the reader to the Antiguan people themselves, their history and their culture, besides giving much useful practical information for those visiting the 'Heart of the Caribbean'. Comprehensive maps and colour photographs complement the text. Brian Dyde has written other books in the Island Guide series as well as a Caribbean reference book and a history of the West India regiments of the British Army. He and his wife lived in Montserrat from 1987 to 1995 when they were forced to leave because of volcanic activity. They now live in Wales.
