by Nina Segal "Basically, sports is another brand; it is just sexier than soap."
Jennifer Hemmer, director of event and sponsorship marketing, Visa As the director of marketing partnership for the NBA, Jennifer Hemmer worked with country managers around the world from her office in New York. "One minute I was talking to Moscow and two minutes later, Istanbul," says Hemmer. "It was very international." International sports marketing may sound glamorous, and it can be. But there is also a lot of hard, behind-the-scenes work that gets Visa, Nike or Coca-Cola out on the playing field at a major sporting event. The jobs not only involve event management, but also athlete representation, TV rights, sales and distribution, and licensing and promotion. What's a Typical Day Like? Related Resources Find out More

It's the 11th largest industry in the USA, with over 5 million people working in more than a dozen different career tracks from coaching to media sales. If you think sports is just a game, then take another look at the work opportunities that are available in this growing sector of the economy. I'm convinced one of the most important ingredients of a successful career search is a narrow focus Focus on your skills, interests, ambitions - and focus on industry niches that appeal to you. Fortunately, the sports industry offers a very tight focus that's well supported by the internet. Student's Guide to Careers in SPORTS MANAGEMENT What is Sports Management? Common Careers in Sports Management Sports Marketing and Promotions Ticket Sales -
For amateur and professional events, ticket revenue is vital. The process is more complicated than simply opening the ticket booth, such as establishing ticket policies and ticket promotions. Responsibilities may include management of computerized ticket systems, accounting and auditing controls, group sales, and training of assistants. Public Relations - The public is the customer. In order to help satisfy the customer and provide them the information they desire, a skilled communicator is necessary, one who is familiar with all of the aspects of the event or sport. Public Relations specialists work to obtain publicity to fill stadia, increase the visibility of colleges, and promote players. Some typical activities of PR specialists include preparing media guides, arranging/conducting press briefings, coordinating press conferences, sending news releases to the media, maintaining files, and maintaining a scrapbook. Sports Information - We crave statistics, trends, personal information and anything else that helps the fans understand the nature of the game better. The Sports Information Director handles media coverage of events; develops feature stories and arranges interviews; produces media guides, promotional brochures, and events programs; maintains up-to-date stats for media.

    By Martin McNeal
    Bee Staff Writer
(Published Oct. 31, 2001) Art Long and Jabari Smith were brothers of the same game last season, inactive on the Kings' roster during the playoffs. During this preseason, both players Long with the Seattle SuperSonics and Smith with the Kings were waiting and hoping, and hoping some more, that they would not be called into the coach's office. And they weren't. Long and Smith were on the Arco Arena court early Tuesday afternoon before the regular-season opener for both teams, won by the Kings 101-95. Smith did not get into the game; Long had two points and four rebounds in 10 minutes. How long they'll be able to stay with their teams is another question. In part, they are on rosters because of injuries. Predrag Drobnjak of the Sonics and Chris Webber of the Kings both have sprained left ankles.

Sports Medicine Careers Choosing a career in a health promotion or sports related field is possibly the easiest career decision you might make. But once you have that coveted degree, then what? That's when the real work begins. The career choices available are endless and determining what path to take can be excruciating. One of the best pieces of advice I can give the sports medicine student is to take advantage of any and all internship possibilities available. The internship is ultimately the best way to immerse yourself in a chosen field without any long-term commitment. What better way to discover if that is really the way you want to spend 40 hours a week? So, the next question is how do you find the great internships? Well, if your college doesn't offer a lot of placement assistance, here are a few sites that do: Internships The really great thing about most internships is that they bring with them opportunities to 'get your foot in the door' in the organizations that are hiring. If you don't land a job from your internship, often you'll make some great contacts that will lead to job offers. If you still haven't found what you're looking for in a career, you may want to check into the following sites.

    http://www.wsf.org.uk/research/careers.htm
    Careers in sport
    Introduction
Although the number of women working in sport is on the increase it is still an industry dominated by men. Men are more likely to hold positions of influence and authority. For example of the 113 members of the IOC only 13 are women. However both of the G.B. representatives are female. There has been little change in the percentage of women holding senior positions amongst governing bodies since 1968. This may be partly explained by the fact that the traditional route in to administration is from ex-players. Women are more likely to drop out of sport once their playing days are over in order to focus on domestic responsibilities. With greater awareness of gender equity amongst organisations more women will be encouraged to take up careers in sport, and will find that there are opportunities for them to do so. Career options These are a few of the careers that are available within the sports world; this is not an exhaustive list by any means. For further information on any of the jobs listed here, contact your school, college, university or local careers service. Sports Development
