About the Music Department
Located in the heart of Portland's thriving Cultural District, the Department of Music prepares students for a wide range of careers in music. We maintain close ties with the Oregon Symphony, Portland Opera, Portland Symphonic Choir, Portland Youth Philharmonic, and many other performing organizations. Our programs are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. No other institution in the state offers so many opportunities for young musicians. World-class musicians visit for performances and master classes in resident programs such as the PSU Piano Recital Series, Friends of Chamber Music, and the Portland Guitar Festival.
We offer both traditional and innovative musical studies, including classical performance, jazz performance, music history, theory, conducting, composition and music education. Choose between the conservatory structure of the BM degree or the broader BA and BS degrees. Either way, you'll work with some of the finest professional musicians in the area. Graduate students can earn a MM in Performance, MM in Conducting, MA in Teaching, or MS in Teaching. The Music Education Certification Program (K-12) is another option. General Information
In the music therapy major students apply specifically designed music experiences and activities to the treatment of individuals and groups in all age categories who have psychological, emotional, physical, social, intellectual, or medical disorders. What the Major is Like Throughout the ages, music has been recognized for its curative effects. In the study of modern music therapy, students learn to apply the art of music, with all its effects, to the science of therapeutic treatment. A career in music therapy demands maturity and creativity. Strong musical skills and a desire to work with, and to help, others are musts. This major is housed in departments (or schools and colleges) of music that have been approved by the National Association for Music Therapy or the American Association for Music Therapy. In large part, these associations prescribe the curriculum, which comprises four areas: music, behavioral and life sciences, music therapy, and general education. The music component of the program, as for most music majors, requires music theory, music history and literature, applied music study and performance, and conducting. In addition to this traditional study, training in music therapy also requires the study of piano, guitar, and voice. Functional skills on these instruments include performing children's folk and popular songs by ear (without accompaniment) and in more than one key. These music skillsboth functional and basicare the tools of the trade, for without question, the stronger the musician, the better the music therapist.

A Rich Past
When Warren Wheaton founded his namesake village in 1859, he encountered Jonathan Blanchard, an educator, social activitst, and fellow pioneer who would help him shape the destiny of the fledgling community. Wheaton and
Blanchard shared a common vision for a settlement characterized by church related education. Wheaton donated land for the development of a Christian liberal arts college. On January 9, 1860, Wheaton College welcomed its first classes. Committed to a classical liberal arts curriculum and grounded in a Christian worldview, Wheaton rose from humble beginnings to become one of the nation's leading liberal arts colleges.

The music business is a multi-billion dollar industry that touches people in every corner of the world. It all starts with the songwriters and composers, without whom there would be no music. But once a song is written, there is a whole industry that supports it the "business" side of the music industry. Many people in the business started out playing music or singing in chorus in their high schools just like you. Some realized that their best talents were on the business side. Still, many music industry jobs utilize one's background in music in day to day operations.
