Introduction
Programs in architecture and environmental design intend to teach people to apply design skills to modify physical surroundings. Various program specialties are available. Programs in architecture teach people to design buildings that are life-enhancing and that provide shelter and environmental protection. Environmental design programs stress problem-solving skills and awareness of environmental issues in interior and exterior environments. Programs in interior design usually include space planning, finish materials, and furniture design. Landscape architecture includes land use planning, the analysis of environmental impact, and the detailed development of land and sites of all sizes and uses. Programs in urban design focus on structures and other physical elements that make up a city and promote social, psychological, and economic well-being. Programs in city, community, and regional planning (often called urban planning) prepare people to plan and implement solutions to community problems and to guide and prepare communities for change. A few community colleges offer one-year or two-year programs related to architecture and environmental design such as architectural technology, interior design, and landscape design. Some also offer programs that transfer to a four-year college or university.

Today's Careers for Research-Trained Psychologists Many graduate students limit their career choices by preconceptions of what research psychologists can do, but your educational experience and skills prepare you for a wide variety of opportunities! For example, there are psychologists designing cockpits for NASA and furniture for manufacturing companies; they analyze studies to evaluate the comfort of mattresses and the decision making ability of submarine captains. Psychologists develop incentive systems for brokerage houses or personnel evaluation systems for police departments; they study the alleviation of dental pain perception and the stress evaluation of working at crime scenes; and their research impacts jury selection and prison design, toy advertising and video presentation, TV dial locations and computer software. (If you'd like to learn more from research psychologists who have traveled some of these different paths, then visit Interesting Careers in Psychology section in which they tell their own stories about their their rewarding yet challenging "alternative" careers!) Research-trained psychologists are found in almost every possible type of workplace or job site. Many of these are listed in the left-hand column below. The types of work performed are listed in the right-hand column. The number of possible combinations is staggering, and you can bet that for almost every one there will be a research-trained psychologist on the job!

12.1. Architecture
A typical role for an architect is to head the team which designs buildings (which may consist of structural, mechanical and electrical engineers, quantity surveyors, land surveyors, property consultants and interior designers). An architect in a small firm, however, may design buildings, document them (which takes an extensive knowledge of structures, materials and law), administer contracts, run an office and keep the business financially viable. Many architects combine careers (architect/developer, architect/builder, architect/lawyer, architect/planner). Some enter service industries, specialising, for instance, in furniture design and manufacture or programming for computer-aided design.
