30. Some Thoughts About The Death Penalty
I see absolutely no positive side of capital punishment and, as I've mentioned, Isee these days if the teacher insisted on my listing both pros and cons.

Thoughts about killing prisoners
Click here to read a response to Marilyn vos Savant's Feb. 17th column in which she supported the death penalty. Even with all the publicity that has surrounded Virginia's possible execution of innocent men, Virginians continue to support the death penalty. How can this be? Do they blindly trust the justice system to select only guilty men to kill? I know they've heard of the O.J. Simpson trial and Mark Furhman, yet they think justice is fair. They've also probably heard about the Randall Dale Adams case in Texas and they see how Richard Jewell in Atlanta is being treated. They've seen how elections are run and read the news. They make jokes about lawyers and politicians. Yet they still trust the justice system to be fair and to not make mistakes. Sigh!! Must be nice to be so naive. Click here if you're naive Capital punishment is a very serious matter, not something to be voted on with the gut. Even when only "guilty" men are executed, the practice of capital punishment has unintended victims:
  • the judges who must weigh their religious and philosophical beliefs with the technicalities of the law and make the serious decision about whether to sentence a man to death the guards, counselors, other prison officials and employees, fellow prisoners, and spiritual leaders who have come to know the condemned men and women

DEATH SENTENCE - PROS AND CONS
- P.Arangasmy
Human rights activists all over the world consistently make a hue and cry against the enforcement of death sentence. It is also known as capital punishment. Many of us may not be aware of the fact that the word 'capital' means the head, perhaps because the head is the place where the cap is put. Even now the raging controversy is on, about the justifiability of the death sentence, in between the advocates and detractors. Those who oppose this argue, depriving one's own life is a barbaric way of cruel punishment. They also add that sometimes even concocted evidence may lead an innocent man to hanging. One flaw in this argument is that if there is a mistake in the evidence, the fault of not finding it out goes to the judiciary. It can not be an effective argument against death sentence.

Turow on Capital Punishment The Jan. 6 issue of the New Yorker has an article by author and former federal prosecutor Scott Turow titled To Kill or Not to Kill : Coming to Terms with Capital Punishment. Turow served on Illinois Governor Ryan's Commission on Capital Punishment, formed after Ryan declared a moratorium on the death penalty in January, 2000. The purpose of the commission was to study what went wrong in Illinois and to make specific recommendations about how to fix the state's broken death penalty system. The Commission issued this report , containing 85 specific recommendations. Not one has been adopted by the Illinois legislature, prompting Governor Ryan to consider blanket clemency for all on death row, a decision he is still contemplating in his final weeks of office. First, Turow explains who served on this Commission: Two sitting prosecutors; two sitting public defenders; a former Chief Judge of the Federal District Court; a former U.S. senator; three women; four members of racial minorities; prominent Democrats and Republicans. Twelve of us were lawyers, nine with experience as defense attorneys and eleven—including William Martin, who won a capital conviction against the mass murderer Richard Speck, in 1967—with prosecutorial backgrounds." Turow recounts that at the press conference announcing the Commission, the members were asked whether any of them opposed capital punishment. Four people raised their hands, Turow's was not among them.

Week of:
August 12, 2001 Capital Punishment: An Act of Mercy
by: F.R. Duplantier How can anyone take a position on the issue of capital punishment without considering the spiritual implications of death and judgment? DEAD MAN SQUAWKING*
As their days of departure draw nigh,
You may hear death-row denizens sigh:
"I'm not certain still
That it's so bad to kill,
But I personally would rather not die!" Dead Man Walking was made into a feature film starring Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon. Reeking with false compassion for convicted murderers awaiting execution on death row, both the book and the movie offered an emotional appeal for the prohibition of capital punishment. Ironically, Sister Helen has conceded in at least one interview that some of the condemned men to whom she has ministered have experienced conversion as a direct result of knowing the certain date of their departure from this world. Nevertheless, she seems unable to recognize that salvation is a greater good than life itself, and persists in opposing the one means available for rescuing especially hard cases from certain damnation. Professional genius Marilyn vos Savant once devoted half of her "Ask Marilyn" column in Parade magazine to a consideration of the pros and cons of capital punishment, without once mentioning the possibility of an afterlife and the correlation between reconciliation and the prospect of eternal punishment. Marilyn conceded that she considers "capital murder far more abhorrent than . . . capital punishment" and for that reason "reluctantly support[s] the administration of the death penalty." She insisted, however, that she could find "nothing positive about the concept of capital punishment." Apparently, Marilyn hasn't searched hard enough.
