Cons
Harsh weather in winter makes viewing hard for tropical animals, parking prices The Bottom Line A wonderful Seattle must-see Full Review Whom would have guessed? The Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington, has quietly become one of the best zoos in the world. WHY? It has been a leader in anturalistic exhibits since the 70's, and only the Bronx Zoo has won more national exhibit awards. With a huge collection of animals, the Woodland Park Zoo is a wonderful place to spend a day. The grounds cover 92 acres, but only 65 are actually open to visitors (not including a memorial garden near the South Gate dedicated to the heroes of the Spanish-American War), so it is just the right size for a three or four hour family adventure. One great thing about this zoo is that it has a wide variety of animals that will appeal to just about anyone. The typical zoo visitor will marvel at "typical" zoo animals like indian elephants, grizzly bears, lions, gorillas, giraffes, hippos, etc. but also appreciate creatures such as snow leopards, toucans, siamangs, and bald eagles. On the other hand, the zoo enthusiast will flip over seeing rare animals like desmarest's hutias, springhaas, african wild dogs, malayan tapirs, and white-eared pheasants that might not attract your average "megafauna" fan.

FCUSA COMMENTARY, FEBRUARY 15, 2000 Dogs, Cats and DNA By Teresa Platt, Executive Director, FCUSA AMERICANS ARE NOTED FOR THEIR LOVE of domesticated cats and dogs, our cherished pets. We have selectively bred a wide range of animals that are clean, loyal and rewarding companions. There truly is a pet for everyone, no matter what the lifestyle or need. In 1998 and 1999, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) claimed that by using DNA testing, it found the fur of domesticated dog and cat mislabeled and used as trim in garments and figurines sold in the US. Obviously, most Americans would find such a trade unacceptable and reject the products immediately if they were correctly labeled. Mislabeling any product, no matter how inexpensive, is consumer fraud, and comes under the jurisdiction of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Fines and penalties can be severe. Trade in Animal Products Canines and felines, as with many other species, occur both in the wild and in domesticated settings, plus there are feral populations of domesticated animals now living wild. The meat and fur of wild canines and felines, such as raccoon dog, coyote, fox, wolf, bobcat and lynx, are utilized in most societies and traded widely. International trade in any wild species at risk is, of course, tightly controlled by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

Opened in 1928, the Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park is no ordinary pet cemetery. This facility’s lush 10 acre grounds include the final resting places of the pets that belonged to many of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Rudolph Valentino’s dog “Kabar” is buried here as are the pets of Steven Spielberg, Gloria Swanson, Harry James and Mae West. There are a lot of cheerful flowers and lawn ornaments at the cemetery, and many of the ground’s trees are decorated at Christmas. The cemetery is located in Calabassas, just off the 101 freeway.

Wild Dog. What does that mean? Well, for some, Wild Dog is often used negatively. Wild Dog is not someone's pet gone wild but a legitimate term used to describe two of the most endangered carnivores in the world. The Wild Dog Foundation was formed with the intention of bringing notice to two greatly neglected carnivores. This will be done by education and with the hopes of raising funds for research projects. The Wild Dog of Africa (Lycaon Pictus) and the Dhole (Cuon Alpinus) of Asia are two forgotten carnivores in the popular world of conservation. They are often ignored along with other misunderstood Wild Dogs of the world.
The African Wild Dog is the most endangered carnivore in the world. They are also the most social member of the dog family. The African Wild Dog is one of the few mammals who takes care of its old, sick and disabled. They have colorful calico coats of black, yellow and white. Their numbers have severely declined due to disease, loss of habitat and human persecution.
Wild Dogs weigh between 35-70 lbs. As many as 40 dogs may be in a pack, but 8-15 is average.

    The Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus)
  • Read more about cheetah conservation
  • Click HERE for slide show. From the early 1960s, the cheetah was regarded as an endangered species. Thanks to the work done at De Wildt, this is no longer the case. The name 'cheetah' is derived from the Hindi word 'chita' which means 'speckled'. There are normal-spotted cheetahs and king cheetahs with striped-and-blotched coats. Why was the cheetah once an endangered species?
As a hunter and meat-eater, the animal is constantly in competition with humans, and particularly with farmers of livestock. A cheetah eats only fresh meat, consuming just enough to satisfy its hunger. Thus it might kill, say a calf but eat only a small part of it. These two factors make the animal despised by livestock farmers. In the wild, the cheetah falls prey most often to the lion and leopard. Today the cheetah has been exterminated from large parts of its natural habitat, and even in the wild is rarely encountered. What does the cheetah look like?

    Mammal Lab
The mammals represent the highest adaptive level of the vertebrate plan of organization. The ultimate basis for their success as a group is the high degree of efficiency achieved by their homeostatic mechanisms, largely as the result of the culmination of certain morphological, physiological, and behavioral trends initiated at lower levels of vertebrate organization and improved by the lines leading to the mammals. This exercise will serve as an introduction to the structure of mammals as a background for a better understanding of their classification and biology. It will also afford an excellent opportunity to review many of the general trends that have occurred within the vertebrates. External Morphology
Obtain a specimen of the albino rat or mouse. The albino rat is a laboratory strain of the Norway or brown rat ( Rattus norvegicus ), a species that has been widely introduced around the world. The albino mouse is a laboratory strain of the House mouse ( Mus musculus ) also with worldwide distribution.
