A Newsletter of Eagles Byte Historical Research September 1997 No. 23 They Came to Yellowknife If you look up Yellowknife in a 1935 world atlas, at least one published in the U. S., you'll come up empty-handed. The provincial capital of the North West Territories, an area covering well over a million square miles, does not appear on the map or in the index. Yet the area's been visited often down through the millennia. First to arrive, as the 4th (Wisconsinian) glacial period receded across the North American continent, were the Hay River and the Slave River. Arising on the eastern slope of British Columbia's Rocky Mountains the Hay River flowed generally north-northeast. The Slave River, coming out of Alberta and Saskatchewan's Athabasca Lake flowed north-northwest. Their paths crossed at a irregularly-shaped,11,000 square mile glacier-gouged depression in the earth's surface and their waters created the eleventh largest lake in the world. Great Slave Lake. And when the depression had filled with their waters, the overflow gouged or followed a path northwestward across the plains and tundra, eventually emerging into the Arctic Ocean at a point about a hundred miles to the east of the Alaskan border. The stage was set for human visitors. The area around the southern shore of the lake was settled by the Slavey band. So named by the Cree and Chipewyan tribes, who often took members of the band prisoner and made bondsmen of them, they would leave their unflattering name on the area, in the name of a river and as the Great Slave Lake. Those on the northern shore were known as the Yellowknife due to the copper found in the metal of their knife blades, giving their name to the city.

And there is no dance this week on the second floor of Murphy's Tavern. Up the hillside along Jay Street, the millstones and condensers of Charles Scholl's gristmill and distillery will go untended. The front door of Alexander McDonald's store won't swing open at the hand of a customer. Diagonally across the square from Murphy's, the tap room of the Starr Tavern is silent. Silence rules the church, the school, the blacksmith shop. The cemetery 300 paces up the hillside is deserted, except for a small work crew repairing a gravestone. On the other side of Abel Road a herd of dairy cattle quietly graze. The cows and the work crew are real. The rest exists solely in old archives and ledgers. The only recent evidence found on the site is a few cut nails, brass buttons, horseshoes, shards of glass. Even the square on Williams Street has vanished. Where it once stood, automobiles swoosh through on Route 36, headed toward and away from Geneseo, three miles to the north. Here stood Williamsburgh, New York. Once. About thirty miles to the North in another, much larger cemetery, Rochester's Mount Hope, rests the mortal remains of one of the city's founders, Nathaniel Rochester himself. But back here in Williamsburgh, his two co-founders, Major Charles Carroll and Colonel William Fitzhugh rest in their quiet plots. One man brought Rochester, Carroll and Fitzhugh to the Genesee Valley. Williamsburgh owed its existence to one man. The New York State towns and cities of Sodus, Geneva, Bath, Caledonia and Lyons also owed their presence to one man. Charles Williamson. He rests beneath the waves of the Atlantic.

In their first game on Friday, they beat the Canadian team 107-39; on Saturday, they beat another Canadian team 25 to 100 plus I’m not sure of what the final score was, I just know that whichever sport the Lake City High School kids play in, they excel at it. There was only one "casualty," one kid came home wearing an ice bag on his ankle. It is almost always a pleasure to drive for LCHS. The kids are almost always well behaved and keep the bus reasonably clean. It is rare that there is ever any problem with them.

In the United States there are powerful "booster clubs" made up of alumni who want to see their old school, or "Alma Mater," continue to do well in sports. Further pressure is added because of lucrative television broadcasts of major college basketball and football games. These booster clubs raise millions of dollars each year to be used for athletic scholarships to attract gifted athletes to a college. In competing for athletes some colleges have been known to overlook entrance requirements so that gifted athletes who are poor students can gain admission. Because these students cannot handle the usual course load, special courses must be set up. There have even been reports of powerful coaches telling professors to pass an athlete with poor grades so that he can continue to play for the college. Some students discover that once they are injured and are no longer able to play they lose their scholarships.
