I am interested in looking at the Canadian military (and of course, our
infamous peacekeepers), its training, its activities, its policies, etc.
from a feminist perspective. Specifically I want to look at the
construction of militarized masculinity of Canadian troops and the
manifestations and affects of this masculinity. If anyone out there has
any information or sources that might be of use to me, PLEASE contact me.
I am especially interested in stuff the military is doing abroad that rarely
makes it into the public eye (i.e. use of prostitutes, treatment of local
people, etc.) Also does anyone know of an article that documents the troops dinner honouring Marc Lepine? Thanks very much

militarised masculinity of the Canadian armed forces. With data drawn from
interviews with 150 military wives and former wives, the book is also a
good application of feminist methodology. (I notice that you are close by
at Trent - I bought my copy at the Toronto Women's Book Store. You might
want to call them to see if they still have, or can order, copies.)
Harrison teaches Sociology at Brock University (in St. Catharine's

W e are pleased to announce that Manitoba has now formed two Chapters of the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping (CAVUNP). Originally the only Chapter was in Winnipeg. A group of ex-Peacekeepers formed the first executive on the 6th of December, 2000 and were supported by 22 others in the first six months of operating as a Chapter. As the membership grew the Manitoba Chapter, as it was originally know, split to form a second Chapter in Brandon. At this time it was also decided that the name Manitoba Chapter would have to be changed to differentiate between the two Chapters. Each Chapter then decided on its own unique name at their respective Executive Meetings. The one based in Winnipeg approached LGen (ret) RR Crabbe to use his name for the Chapter. He graciously accepted and the Manitoba Chapter, based in Winnipeg, will be known as the "LGen RR Crabbe Chapter" (LGen (ret) RR Crabbe,CMM, MSC, CD, B Sc shown here), and the newer Chapter based in Brandon will be known as the "Holopina Chapter". The LGen RR Crabbe Chapter will hold its meetings on the 1st Wednesday of each month at the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans Unit #283, 3584 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba. We thank the Executive of ANAVETS #283 for allowing us to use their facility as our home base.

Top soldier says Canadian military ready for action
Last Updated Mon, 21 Oct 2002 9:45:38 EDMONTON - Despite underfunding and troop shortages, Canadian soldiers are ready and willing to join a military effort in Iraq if Ottawa gives its approval, says one of Canada's top military leaders. Lieutenant Colonel Pat Stogran spoke at a fundraising dinner for military families at the Edmonton garrison Saturday. It was his first public speaking event since returning from Afghanistan, where he led 850 Canadian soldiers. Pat Stogran (file photo) He has a new position at national defence headquarters in Ottawa. Stogran said now that he's back in the country, he plans to speak out about the threat of international terrorism and the need to spend more money on Canadian defence. Stogran said the war on terror isn't over and Canada must be ready to fight overseas if necessary. "I very strongly feel that we owe it, and our children, our grandchildren and their children are relying on us right now to get it right, because this war is going to keep going on," said Stogran. The U.S.-led military operation in Afghanistan proved the combat-ready capabilities of Canadian soldiers, Stogran said.

Review of Zuehlke's book.
http://www.journal.dnd.ca/legacy/vol1/no1_e/bookrev_e/book5_e.htm
The title notwithstanding, Mark Zuehlke’s book is much more than a study of the comparatively minor battle for the southern Italian port of Ortona. The real focus of his work is the 1st Canadian Infantry Division’s month-long fight to clear the German defences between the Moro and Riccio Rivers. This struggle, which culminated with the fall of Ortona, was the first extended engagement by a Canadian division in the Second World War. It was a bitter and protracted fight that pitted the Canadian division, in conditions that mirrored the Somme and Passchendaele, against some of the finest units of the Wehrmacht . The story is an important one. By November 1943, the Allied drive into central Italy had stalled before the German main defensive line. In an effort to break this operational paralysis, Montgomery ordered his Eighth Army to attack north along the Adriatic Coast in an effort to break through the German defensive line. Success would be followed by exploitation west, through the Avezzano Valley, to seize Rome. It was a spectacular misreading of German strength and the limitations imposed by weather and terrain. In a result that was all but pre-ordained, the Eighth Army failed to achieve a decisive penetration of the German line. The best that could be achieved was the establishment and slow expansion of a British lodgement across the Sangro River, the main German defensive line. The German defenders, pushed off the Sangro River, sullenly withdrew a few kilometers to new positions along the Moro River. The cost to the British was the better part of the fighting strength of the attacking Corps.

Canadian military react against peace vigils
by: Homes not Bombs Toronto: Faced with opening its doors to the homeless of Toronto or continuing to remain a war training camp, the officials in charge of Toronto's Moss Park Armoury have made a choice which is loud and clear: bombs, not homes. The dozen individuals from Homes not Bombs arriving for the second of their ongoing Tuesday evening vigils at the armoury entrance were intrigued by a new sign on the barbed wire fence which surrounds the property. "Security Zone in Effect," reads the hastily prepared document strung to the fence, with the proviso that "only authorized Canadian Forces personnel may enter." When we asked one of the reservists why this was happening, he explained, "It's because of you guys."

Sunday, February 2, 2003 Back The Halifax Herald Limited Canadian military contribution to Iraq war would be marginal
By Stephen Thorne / The Canadian Press Petawawa, Ont. - Canada's contribution to a war in Iraq - should it make one - could include as little as a naval and air force presence in the Persian Gulf or as much as a battle group in a forward base, insiders say. Whatever their role, it's very unlikely Canadian troops of any kind will be part of an invasion force. Instead, they would probably come in after the initial fighting, as they did in Afghanistan a year ago. Light infantry soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, pulled out all the stops on a recent cold-weather exercise in eastern Ontario, conducting helicopter-borne assaults with live ammunition and light-armoured support. Some 500 soldiers from the battalion, which is now on one-year's rotation as Canada's rapid reaction force, had already been through urban warfare training at Fort Drum in New York State last May. None of the exercises employed tactics specific to an Iraq scenario and commanders of the Canadian Forces' senior regiment, formed before the Boer War at the turn of the last century, say they have been told nothing.

The West, Ontario, the Maritimes, Newfoundland
Canada's federal and regional nature has prompted a number of useful examinations of the war. For Nova Scotia, the explosion of the munitions ship Mont Blanc in Halifax harbour, killing over 1 600 outright and maiming and blinding thousands more, was perhaps the defining event of the war. Newfoundland was not yet a part of Canada and the Royal Newfoundland Regiment's experience, first at Gallipoli and then being virtually wiped out at Beaumont-Hamel on the Somme, provided a unique facet of the war. Joy Cave's book examines the impact of such catastrophic losses on the tiny Newfoundland outports. Armstrong, John G.
