Most students at Hohenfels High School in Germany are from U.S. military families posted overseas. Sometimes America can seem far away. This month, the 11th and 12th graders in Joyce Dusenberry's astronomy class at the school made that distance shrink. From their classroom computer, they pointed a large telescope in California to study a place that's really far away: Jupiter. "Every student in the class gave commands to the computer to control the telescope," Dusenberry said. "I saw excitement in the eyes of some students who had given up on science because they thought it was too hard or too boring. Being allowed to operate the telescope piqued their interest and hopefully reopened their minds to the joy of learning science." With that online observing session, the students also became the first overseas participants in a five-year-old research and education partnership that has already enriched learning opportunities for more than 10,000 students in schools throughout the United States. The students and their teachers collaborate with scientists from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., and with education experts at the Lewis Center for Educational Research, Apple Valley, Calif., to use a big-dish radio telescope that's out in the desert near Barstow, Calif.

223rd Infantry Regiment (Combat Arms)
California's Military Schools: The New Look
by Sgt. Paul S. Emu s Camp San Luis Obispo is looking for a few more good soldiers. It's because of the big change going on with the Total Army School System, started in 1996 to set a single standard, reduce redundancies, and have efficient utilization of resources. "It's not a simple project," said Command Sergeant Major William J. Urquhart of the 223rd Infantry Regiment (Combat Arms). "It's not just the CMA (California Military Academy) with a new name. It's no longer a little institution that trained in the summer." No longer are there any state military academies in the Guard. Instead there's regiment (or brigade) for the 14 western states, which in turn has battalions and training companies. The National Guard has combat arms and leadership missions, while the U.S. Army Reserve does all other support type training. The 223rd Regiment has an infantry battalion in California; an armor battalion in Arizona; a field artillery battalion in Wyoming; an armor battalion in Idaho; and air defense artillery in North Dakota. The regiment is the coordinating authority across state lines, and gets students from as far as Germany, Hawaii, Guam, and including the Active components. The Officer Candidate School (OCS) gets about 90 percent of its students from the 40th Divisions.

National Guard Fact Sheet
Description of the Unit
The Civil Support Team (CST) is a high-priority response unit supporting civil authorities in responding to a weapons of mass destruction (WMD) situation. The unit is made up of 22 full-time National Guard members. It consists of six sections: command, operations, communications, administration/logistics, medical, and survey, who have been specially trained and equipped to provide a technical reach-back capability to other experts. The team is formed specifically to provide advice to the Incident Commander to help make assessments of the requirements for follow-on forces. The unit is commanded by a Lieutenant Colonel, jointly staffed with Army and Air National Guard personnel, and encompasses 14 military occupational skills. The unit is Federally resourced, trained, equipped, and sustained, with the State National Guard providing the personnel, stationing, and common support. The Adjutant General either employs the CST to support the State response under the direction of the Governor or to support another State's response under a supported Governor. Congress has authorized 32 CSTs. The first 10 teams authorized in the National Defense Appropriations Act for fiscal 1999 have achieved the certification required by law and in accordance with Department of Defense criterion. Seventeen additional teams were authorized in fiscal 2000, and all of them are certified as well; five more teams were authorized in fiscal 2001. Three of these latest teams were certified as operational on 5 February 2003.

The message says "Public Schools Embrace Islam - A Shocker." It focuses on seventh graders in Byron, California, and says that although students in a growing number of public schools cannot wear crosses or utter the name of Jesus, they are being required to attend an intensive three-week course on Islam including mandated study of the tenets of Islam, the important people of Islam, wearing of a robe, adopting a Moslem name, and staging their own Jihad. It says that the California-required course uses a textbook that says a lot more about Islam than about Christianity and quotes a teacher who says she couldn't teach Christianity like that and can't even say the name of Jesus in the classroom, but the seventh graders are learning how to pray to Allah. The Truth:
This eRumor has been explosive, both in terms of how quickly it grew in circulation on the Internet and the reaction it prompted.
