PERRIS - There will be snappy salutes and crisp, pressed uniforms. Students will address their instructors as "sir" or "ma'am." And there will be discipline. In 13 months, Perris Union High School District will be home to Southern California's first public military academy, a charter school that eventually will serve 300 seventh- to 12th-grade boys and girls. It will be open to students in Riverside, San Bernardino and the surrounding counties. The new California Military Institute will be the second such public charter school in the state. Oakland Military Institute opened a year ago after months of debate among Bay Area civic leaders, educators and parents.

MARCH AIR RESERVE BASE
In 1996, March Air Force Base was realigned to become March Air Reserve Base. The facility includes the March Field Museum, military family housing, the U.S. Customs Service, and expansion of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Riverside Cemetery, which is three times larger than Arlington National Cemetery. Personnel from March ARB have supplemented security at California airports in the days after September 11th, and have been deployed as far away as Turkey in support of Operation Northern Watch. This past year, Senator Boxer had the pleasure of touring "The American Spirit", a C-17 Globemaster III, at March ARB. Produced at the Boeing plant in Long Beach, California, it is capable of performing airlift and airdrop missions, and delivering combat forces to potential battle areas rapidly and effectively. March Field was established in 1918, and the City of Riverside threw a parade announcing that an army flying field was coming to the neighborhood. Community leaders such as Frank Miller, the owner of the Mission Inn in Riverside, pushed for approval from the War Department to construct an airfield on what was then Alessandro Flying Training Field.

The California Virtual Academies currently serve students in grades K-5 (grades 6 and 7 coming for the 2003-04 school year). The California Virtual Academies have chosen as its curriculum provider.
The California Virtual Academies are a network of virtual public charter schools, founded in the summer of 2002, that blend innovative new instructional technology with a traditional curriculum for students all across California. The charters were sponsored by the Spencer Valley School District in San Diego County; Maricopa Unified School District in Kern County; Jamestown School District in Tuolumne; Lammersville School District in San Joaquin; West Park School District in Fresno; and the San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District in Santa Cruz County.
Each is an autonomous school authorized by the district hosting it that can enroll students living in their home county or adjoining counties. For example, if you live in Santa Clara County, your child is eligible to enroll in our charter partner based in Santa Cruz County. See below to find the school that serves your county.

Oakland High School Students Shut Down BART Posted by jose on Friday, March 21, 2003 @ 00:37:08 PST (52 reads) Anonymous writes "About 200 students walking out of Freemont high school in protest of the war on Iraq on March 20 marched to the Fruitvale BART station and tried to rush the station demanding free rides to the Anti-War protest in downtown Oakland. The police held students back, and forced the BART station to close down, not allowing any one to get into the station or trains to stop at the station. Students had no other way than to walk to the protest, since buses would not pick them up either."
