This paper examines the history of the Central African Copperbelt's mermaid figure, the lake spirit of the Lamba and kindred peoples of the Copperbelt and Shaba Provinces. It suggests that the image of the mermaid is an example of diffusion, or cultural borrowing, and that this shadowy lake spirit only assumed the guise of a European-looking mermaid in the 20th century.
Mamba Muntu and the Lamba Chitapo Until replaced by Old Testament scenes and portraits of Jesus in the 1980s, the Mamba Muntu mermaid - also known as la sirène (the mermaid), and, in Kolwezi, as madame poisson Whether reclining or seated, Mamba Muntu is an arresting and seductive figure. She is typically adorned with jewels, a watch, comb, and mirror, and inevitably has a large snake wound around her body. ng'anga whom Jules-Rosette interviewed in the Lusaka area each regarded this mermaid as an evil spirit which caused the men she possesses to abandon their wives (Jules-Rosette 1981:160; Burton 1961:58; Grévisse 1956-58,33:144).

Cajun cuisine is a creative adaptation of indigenous Louisiana foods. THE FOOD.The food represents the sharing of these peoples drink / bwa. eat / manje.
http://www.cwj.net/Cajun_Creole_FS.html
CAJUN CREOLE THE PEOPLE THE PEOPLE Linguists find the roots of the word "Creole" to be in the Spanish "Criallo," meaning mixture of cultures or colors (the brand name "Crayola"™ has the same root), and the Latin word "creare," meaning to create. In essence, the sense is of a new creation of a multi-colored race. The Creoles, originally, were the children of European aristocrats, born in New Orleans. The Spanish, in order to establish New Orleans in the early 1690s, sought out aristocrats who, by being the second sons, were not entitled to inheritences. The intermarriage of the seven nations that settled the city in the late 1600s, created Creole culture in the larger sense. So Creole is Native American, French, Spanish, English, African, German and Italian. THE FOOD THE FOOD The food represents the sharing of these peoples ITALY: pastry and ice cream making Creole cooking is more complex than Cajun. It can be thought of as "city cooking."

Introduction
Latin American music is extremely rich and varied, encompassing different traditions from Mexico, Central America, South America (Spanish-speaking countries and Portuguese-speaking Brazil, among others), and the Caribbean (Spanish-speaking Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic, as well as French influenced Haiti, and the British Caribbean, most notably Jamaica). Latin American music has benefited from very varied influences: Spanish and Portuguese, Native American (especially in the Amazon region, Mexico, Guatemala and the Andes), and African (primarily in the Caribbean islands and Caribbean coast of South America). Native American Music We know little about Native American music in the Americas before the conquests (pre-Columbian music). Archeological studies at Maya, Aztec and Inca sites have given us some information, as have descriptions made by missionaries. Different types of drums, flutes, and trumpet-like instruments were used. Stringed and other instruments were introduced in the 16th century by the Europeans. Mestizo Music The term mestizo refers to Latin Americans who combine indigenous and European traits. Mestizo music has received both of those influences. European instruments and derivations of them include the harp, the guitar, the violin, and the accordion. The African marimba is also common in popular bands in Mexico and Central America. Trumpets also became common in Mexican bands in this century (mariachi bands). Flutes are the main contribution of native culture, most notably in the Incan region (Peru), and varied percussion instruments the main instrumental African influence, primarily along the Caribbean coasts.

Ideology in the Schoolbooks in the Belgian Congo
By Honoré Vinck

The following text is an adaptation and updating of a Seminar Paper discussed in the Wednesday Seminars of the Institute for Advanced Study and Research in the African Humanities at the Northwestern University, Evanston, on March 8, 1995. The text has been first published as: The Influence of Colonial Ideology on Schoolbooks in the Belgian Congo, Paedagogica Historica (Gent), 23(1995)2,355-406. Footnotes are not reproduced and updated bibliography can be found in the Bibliographical section of this African Schoolbook Project Site. Acronyms are explained in annexe.
Abstract
The analysis of about 50 textbooks, used in the elementary schools of the former Belgian Congo in the Region of the Equator and Upper R.D. Congo Provinces, reveals how the school education propagated the most formal colonial ideology in the terms proposed by the Belgian political authorities. Fundamental themes such as the legitimacy of the colonisation and the sources of authority, and the bearers and symbols of colonial authority take an important place in the texts posed to the children. The traditional pre-colonial beliefs and life-style were placed in opposition to the new western institutions in a black-is-bad and white-is-good terminology.

A to Z of Dominica Heritage by Lennox Honychurch
reprinted with permission
Origin of Words: (A) African, (C) Carib, (E) English, (F) French A B C D ... W N Napier: National Day : (E) Long before Dominica achieved internal self-government in 1967, the third day in November was observed as "Discovery Day", being the day on which Columbus sighted and renamed the island in 1493. From 1965 Edward Le Blanc conceived the day as one of nationalist celebration, National Day. Although Dominica formally became a self-governing Associated State with Britain on 1 March 1967, celebrations were delayed until 3 November, and National Day was observed as such from then onwards. It was also the day chosen for full independence in 1978 and thereby continues a tradition that began in the 1960s. Newtown : (E) When British plans to make Portsmouth the capital of Dominica were abandoned in 1768, Royal Engineer, Nathaniel Minshall, surveyed and drew plans for transforming the French village of Roseau into the capital. This included extending the town southwards. High Street was supposed to have been the centre of the main public buildings and commerce, with the Anglican Church in the middle of the Church Savannah, now called the Newtown Savannah. The Old Roseau Boys School was the military warehouse with the landing place on the beach. It was thought that the new town would be better defended. The whole of new British Roseau was to be renamed Charlotteville after Queen Charlotte but it did not develop as planned. The name "Roseau" remained in use and the extension was simply called Newtown. Only Charlotte Valley survives from the intended name of Charlotteville and Newtown, along with Kings Hill and Citronier, has now become a thriving suburb of Roseau.
