We are a membership-based not-for-profit organization working to increase public enjoyment and conservation of butterflies. We are working to save butterfly species throughout North America (recent grants have helped the endangered Schaus' Swallowtail in Florida and contributed to developing a long term survival plan for Monarchs) and developing educational programs about butterflies for schools and park rangers and naturalists. NABA has convinced the U.S. Army to conduct further studies before implementing a plan that would destroy the last known colony of Regal Fritillaries east of the Mississippi River. Our publications are changing the way people view butterflies, teaching them how to find butterflies, how to identify them, how to create successful butterfly gardens, and how to photograph them. Your involvement with butterflies will help to bring beauty and satisfaction to your life.

Tiny machines that fly like insects will soon be a reality. That is the confident prediction of scientists who have just studied the remarkable aerobatics of the butterfly. There is a lot of interest in this sort of thing from toy manufacturers
Dr Adrian LR Thomas
The two Oxford researchers put red admirals in a specially designed wind tunnel and used high-speed cameras to analyse how the animals moved through the air. The results of the experiments, they say, represent a major advance in our understanding of flight mechanics on the small scale, and will be invaluable to engineers trying to build "micro air vehicles". "There is a lot of interest in this sort of thing from toy manufacturers and, of course, the military," Dr Adrian LR Thomas told BBC News Online. "We are now moving in the direction where we will soon be able to build 10-centimetre-wingspan aircraft, either radio controlled or autonomous. "They would make an entertaining toy but if you put a camera on them then the [security agencies] could send them into small spaces such as caves to see what was going on."

Discovering Butterflies!
Index Page Butterflies, along with their close relatives the moths, are insects. Together, they are the most numerous type of insect. The butterfly belongs to the order of insects called lepidoptera. Insects that are in the lepidoptera order have four wings and these wings are covered with scales. To learn more about the butterfly's anatomy click below. Butterfly Anatomy
All insects go through changes as they grow and get older. Metamorphosis is the word that describes the changes that insects go through. Butterflies go through big changes to get to the final stage of being a butterfly. To see the changes and to learn more about the different stages, click below. Butterfly's Metamorphosis
Butterflies usually fly during the daytime. Most of us have all seen a butterfly at one time or another. If you have seen many butterflies, you have probably noticed that they all have bright colorful wing. However, all butterflies are not the same. There are many different kinds of butterflies. In the lepidoptera order, scientists believe that there are between 100,000 and 200,000 different kinds of butterflies and moths. In this Web Quest, we have looked at three different butterflies. The monarch butterfly The peacock butterfly The five bar sword tail butterfly
There are still many more types of butterflies that you can study. Here are some references that you can use to find some information about other butterflies:

  • What is an Insect
Insects belong to a group of animals called arthropods. Arthropods have jointed legs and a hard body wall. Some animals that belong to the arthropod group are shrimps, spiders, crabs, lobsters and insects. Insects differ from other arthropods because they have six jointed legs and three main body parts: head, thorax and abdomen.
  • All About Butterflies
Butterflies are beautiful, flying insects with large scaly wings. Like all insects, they have six jointed legs, 3 body parts, a pair of antennae, compound eyes, and an exoskeleton. The three body parts are the head, thorax (the chest), and abdomen (the tail end).
  • Children's Butterfly Site
Butterflies and moths are some of the world's most wondrous animals even though they can be quite small. Their beauty, metamorphosis, and carefree flight all spark our imaginations. Entomologist Dr. Paul Opler answers children's questions about butterflies

    Patuxent Wildlife Research Center
    Butterfly Monitoring Project
We are happy to announce that the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) has developed a checklist program for North American butterflies. We feel that this approach is the most appropriate way to index changes in state, provincial, and continental populations of skippers and butterflies. At smaller scales such as refuges, parks, and private lands it also may be the most applicable approach. Studies of the literature and pilot work with a number of volunteers around the continent have shown that traditional counts along transects of butterflies and skippers show tremendous variation (CV's average 90+% even within a single day). Additionally much of what constitutes the best habitat for these species are successional and transitional habitats. As such, these habitats are very difficult to sample without bias over time. Checklists as presented currently within the NABA program have an observer chosen sampling frame which maximizes the number of participants and the amount of data entered. However, because the sites are not currently chosen randomly or systematically, care must be taken in the interpretation of these data especially in extrapolating to areas outside of those sampled. That said, because of the volume of information coming in and the extensive nature of their collection efforts, most major changes of common butterfly populations within heavily sampled areas will be captured by this approach. Because of the flexibility of this approach and the nature of sites often having many repeated samples within a year, it remains possible to create more rigorous sampling schemes within the overall checklist scheme now developed.

hey wow its been a busy couple of days. i left my house sat night and didn'treturn til late tuesday. lots of stuff happened, most bad, some good.

    hey
ah how sad, i've succumed to the popular use of blinkies. i'm constantly searching for eminem sites, and i've come across lotsa cliques. so naturally i gotta join. speaking of my new em site, i stumbled across a fanlisting site today that claimed to be the approved fl for the eminem show. i wasn't too happy bout that obviously. so i sent the owner a lil email. btw things with that fl aren't picking up. the fanlistings.org haven't yet pulled my site from upcoming into current, so noone knows it exists! it's all very frustrating. i'm feeling so down. you just...you don't know how deep i've gone. i know i ain't makin sense, cause this whole thing doesn't make sense. you gotta do two things to get what i'm saying: read heart of darkness and watch apocalypse now . it didn't make me upset bout my life or anything but it leaves such a mark on you. both of them, seperate, together any way you like it. the movie [apart from being so fucking long] is so intense. it delves into the phsyche of the characters and in the meantime rips at your own inner primeval heart. plus, if you're studying the book it gives you great insight.
